I am scheduled to go on a business trip with 10 others from my company. I am going through a divorce and I am extremely stressed. I really need to by home and not be away for a week. Does anyone know of a great excuse to give my boss so she will not think I'm lying?

Hi Tilly. I have managed sales teams of up to around 10 - 15 people. My suggestion is that you tell her that you can't leave because you're going through a a tough time and that your marriage is breaking down. If your boss is a good one, she'll appreciate your contribution to the team overall and understand that one business trip isn't a deal breaker. She'll understand that you wouldn't be at your best on the trip anyway with everything that's going on for you. Productive employees are mentally healthy employees. You don't have to lie. It's better to be straight forward. Hopefully, your boss will appreciate your honesty and offer you some much needed support beyond this business trip. Best of luck.

From a business point of view, your personal life should not interfere with work. You are paid to do a job regardless of what else is going on in your life.

Don't take what I'm saying the wrong way - personally I hope things get better for you quickly. It is hard dealing with a stressful situation without letting it affect other areas. But unless you tell her the truth about why you don't want to go on the business trip, you are only making things worse at work. You boss may be understanding and let you off the hook. She may feel for you, but need you to go on the trip anyway. She has to put the business needs before your personal needs when necessary.

uhhhhhhhh.............Tell your boss that your going through a tough time(divorcing) and that your not emotionally equipped to handle the stress of a business trip at the moment. Just do it privately and sincerely. I'm sure they'll understand.

Gee, how about telling her the truth? It sounds really like you have a valid reason.
