If the pain is due to the ear not draining then taking Dramamine can help. This OTC medication reduces swelling in the ear canal and can relieve pressure. It is also a decongestant. I have Meniere's Disease and have been put on the prescription version many times to help prevent ear infections. Also, holding my nose and blowing until my ears pop helps reduce pressure. My allergist advised that I do this especially when I feel pressure building. Don't do it ultil they burst, just until you can feel the popping.

A warm compress also helps. If it is swelling or water in the outer ear the warmth can help melt any wax that may be adding to the pressure and pain.

You should see a doctor. Until then, the Dramamine should help.

Has he seen a doctor? Usually anti-biotics are prescribed and must be adhered to for quite a length of time to make the infection go away. Look up a local walk in emergency clinic or find a doctor and try and get an appointment ASAP. Yes I am sure he is miserable.

Nose spray such as afrin will help the canal so that the ear can drain. This is going to sound stupid but some people swear by it. One thing that will kill the bacteria in the ear canal ia Uric Acid which is in urine. Remember urine is sterile so no harm in trying. Anyway what people do is urinate in a cup and use a dropper and and place several drops in your ear and apply cotton in the ear. good luck.
