1985-86 GTI 8V, the first years of the MK II and the only good 8V GTI's in the MK II.
The others are just some fancy badging on Plain Jane Golfs, and tarnish the GTI name.
How the heck can you be unsure if it is a 16V? Badges everywhere and open the hood for goodness sake! Check the engine tag if you can't id the 16V intake manifold.
I bet used car dealers love you?

The 16v model was introduced around 1986.
Before that, all GTis were 8v.
You can tell immediately when you lift the bonnet - the 16v engine has a flat-ish alloy top, with a blue VW badge and 16v lettering - the 8v engine has a much narrower top, and no blue lettering.

The 16v engine has a intake plenum that looks like 4 bananas in a row above the valve cover. At the top of the bananas it says 16V DOHC across the plenum.
8vs look more basic with a plain black valve cover.

i haven't owned the two. yet as you're saying the 16v will sell swifter. that would in straight forward terms be simply by fact it truly is a extra clever motor. 16v must be stronger simply by fact the respiration is extra clever simply by a miles better area of valve head. the form has a tendency to be on the top end of the rev selection. oftentimes the 8v has somewhat extra low down torque, yet runs out of ability on the coolest end of the rev selection. yet you probable knew this besides!
