to use their tires exclusively?? And... how many teams do you think would be running Hoosiers or B.F. Goodrich if they were permitted to do so?

Because VIR is not a sanctioned track, any team can go there and still be within NASCAR's guidelines. But teams can't use current Goodyear tires because of a leasing agreement intended to prevent extracurricular testing. To circumvent the lack of available tires, teams have started using other manufacturers for test sessions. They also snapped up much of Goodyear's inventory from 2005 and earlier.

Goodyear officials declined a request from The Associated Press for comment Wednesday, and NASCAR said the teams have not technically broken the rules.

Hendrick Motorsports, winners of nine of the first 12 races this season, is believed to have lapped the field in testing this year. Team officials said they've used a variety of test drivers about 30 times this year, and rival car owner Jack Roush said that's unfair.

He said his own five-car team is behind the competition, because he didn't purchase tires from Hoosier or B.F. Goodrich for tests.

Hoosier has been in and out of NASCAR repeatedly and as recently as 1994. That year, the teams had a choice, but NASCAR rules stipulated that each tire supplier, depending on the track, was required to bring as many as 1200 tires to an event. Enough to supply every team for the entire race in case one suppliers tires proved inadequate or unsafe.

The large unsold stock of Hoosiers was about to bankrupt the little company.

Plus the "tire wars" led to softer and softer compounds as Goodyear and Hoosier were trying to build the faster tire.

The softer tires were causing safety problems as the compounds were struggling to maintain integrity under the added stress generated by the increasing speeds.

Fast for a few laps early, dangerous for a few laps at the end and with fuel to burn. Not a very good tradeoff.

NA$CAR pays Goodyear for all the diecasts sold that have Goodyear printed on the tires or a decal on the fender.

the series that include nascar nextel cup, the nascar busch series, and the nascar craftsmen truck series do receive revenues for using goodyear tires, it is not considered a "kickback" it is a licensing agreement to use their tires exclusively for the upper tier of the sport of stock car/truck racing. to keep a better reign on cost and equality it is in the best interest to keep it a one tire only camp.
by the way if i had my choice they would all be running
hoosiers, but hey don't mass market to the everyday user
such as you and i.

Hell with Goodyear, I wanna know what kind of sweetheart deal they have with GM to let Chevy dominate everything. Something's fishy in NASCAR.
