Only one guy got it right, at least bluntly....deterrence. "In a nuclear age, the only true enemy is war itself"

They were developed to save lives. The theory was that a nuclear strike would intimidate an enemy into surrender, saving lives on both sides that would have been lost in a full scale invasion. Now that the technology is out there, it's not going anywhere. Presently nuclear weapons are more of peacekeepers between superpowers. For instance if two nuclear countries were at a state of tension, they know that if they nuke the other, they will more than likely be nuked in return. By having nuclear weapons, it is a way to assure they will not be used.

The main use of nukes is deterrence. It is based on a concept called "Mutually Assured Destruction". If another nation nukes us, we nuke them back and we all die. The idea is to make nuclear war rather pointless.

Mass destruction for the purpose of terrorism.

Reagan wanted to get rid of them all, but the military-industrial complex over-ruled him.

Is it possible to use a nuke without killing even one child?
No.
Then anybody who possesses a nuke intends to murder children.

Do you like child molestors?
No?
Then ban all nuclear weapons now!

It's original intention was to bring a stop to WW2, without having to invade Japan.
Afterward, countries just used it as a threat to keep people from not doing what they say.
I don't think the U.S. will ever use nukes again. Now, Iran and Israel probably will.

Deterrence.

Rogue nations and other powers give you more weight when you have the power to annihilate them at a single command or assure mutual destruction if they proceed to act against your will.
