we believe in Jesus Christ. What is to believe in the Pope thing? Did the early Christians believe in St. Peter? No they recognized he was the head of the Church just like every Church has it's head -- even a little baptist Church has it's head -- the minister. We recognize the authority of the Pope the same way everyone else recognizes the authority of their Pastor or Preacher or whatever you want to call them.

But one of the tenants of the Church, that is to be believed in, is the Supremacy of the Pope. People just mistakenly shorten it to believing in the Pope.
The supremacy of the Pope is greater than the authority of a Pastor. Local Pastors do not have the authority to dictate church beliefs and doctrine.

I believe in the authority of the Pope and recognize him as the leader of the Catholic Church.....Every organization whether religious or secular must have a leader or chaos will ensue.
Peace be with you.

I think a lot of non-Catholics erroneously believe that Catholics take the word of the Pope as the word of God (which is very untrue - I know a lot of Catholics who don't always agree with the pope). Of course I can think of several witty comments to come back with at the suggestion of "believing" in the pope. LOL! Don't let the ignorant nitwits get you down.

Pastor Billy says: way to go Midge another great question. Have I started a Catholic asking-question revolution? Well praise the Lord lets put the Proddies on the hotseat for once they get off too lightly I think. Make them accountable for the careless words they often speak.

they don't see the similarities. the pope is the head of the church.........no because the pastor is head of the church, sadly this comes from emotionalism instead of the truth jesus gave us. non catholics will pervert the bible thousands of ways as opposed to using context and unity=catholikos, universal.

Your statement is why we say you believe in the Pope.

"No they recognized he was the head of the Church just like every Church has it's head"

The early church did not recognize Peter as the "head" of the church. The head of the church is Jesus. The Bible plainly tells us that, and no body (church) can have two heads.

"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body." Ephesians 5:23

The minister of a church is also not the head of the church, as explained above.

And, please, do not insist that Peter was the first Pope. There are many reasons why that is a false statement.

See source for more info on why Peter was not the first Pope and on specific authority in the church.

The phrase "BELIEVE IN" means different things depending on who the object of the sentence is.

When we say, "We believe in God", we are saying that we believe that there is a God who created all things and became a man - Jesus Christ.

When we say< "We believe in Jesus", we mean we believe that He is God and that He is the savior of the world.

When we say "We believe in the Pope" we mean that we believe that he was chosen by God to be the leader of the Catholic Church and we should listen to him as God's appointed one.

When we say "We believe in the Houston Astros" we mean that we believe the the team will play their best and win games.

Because the people who say that tend to be clueless about any forms of religion outside their particular sect, so they have to put things into their own language. Unfortunately it doesn't always translate well.

Because it's religion. Most people don't choose what they believe in, they just believe it cause others do or their parents do and it's sort of like peer pressure.

We just need a more educated world.
