We had our new build brick home in North Carolina painted white. It was very expensive but added to the elegant look of the home and white bricks are not always available. I have never heard of anyone painting brick any other color and wouldn't even attempt it.

it depends on whether it's tastefully done and what the buyer's market is like. you should check some decorating magazines and see what's "in". if you have a realtor, ask them. remember, if you decide to paint brick, it's awfully hard to go back once you put it on there. make sure you pick a good color and know what you are doing or hire somebody that does. i personally like painted brick, but i know a lot of people who don't. it's really just a matter of preference.

The act of painting it won't matter. How much uglier or nicer the house looks because of it. Now that will matter. If it really adds to the house, makes it look better and compliments it, than sure it will help the house's value. If it's disgustingly ugly, it will really take away. And if it's not even really noticable than it won't do anything.
