Here's a question that I have wanted to ask for a long time, but was afraid to ask (didn't wish to offend anyone, still don't, but feel safe asking on here) Why do Jehovah's Witnesses call at people's homes? They are always polite, imaculate, and friendly. Most of us peek at them from behind the curtains, some homeowners however are just rude and slam the door in their faces.Yet, they still keep going door to door. Why is this? I have never known any other religion do this.

Really interesting replies folks, keep them coming. One thing that further confuses me, if the JW's value all human life, why do they not allow blood transfusions?

But then you wouldn't get a fair answer or an accurate one...if you want to know the truth about something, isn't it wise to go to the source for the accurate answer? Our answer is: Because we believe that we are living in the last days as referred to in the Bible (2 Timothy 3:1-5). We feel that it is important for all of us to think about what the outcome of present conditions will be. The question is, What do we need to do if we are to survive the end of this system of things? Also, we love God and our neighbors. That is what we all should do, isn’t it, otherwise we would be held bloodguilty for not warning others of God's impending day or of sharing a wonderful hope for mankind's future. But why do the Witnesses call repeatedly even at homes of people who do not share their faith? We do not force our message on others. But we know that people move to new residences and that the circumstances of people change. Today a person may be too busy to listen; another time he may gladly take the time. One member of a household may not be interested, but others may be. People themselves change; serious problems in life may stimulate an awareness of spiritual need.—See also Isaiah 6:8, 11, 12. This in turn leads to the question: Why are Jehovah’s Witnesses persecuted and spoken against? Jesus said: “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you.” (John 15:18, 19; see also 1 Peter 4:3, 4.) The Bible shows that the whole world lies under Satan’s control; he is the principal instigator of the persecution.—1 John 5:19; Rev. 12:17. Jesus also told his disciples: “You will be objects of hatred by all people on account of my name.” (Mark 13:13) The word “name” here means what Jesus officially is, the Messianic King. Persecution comes because Jehovah’s Witnesses put his commands ahead of those of any earthly ruler.

In Corinthians 11:1 we are urged to imitate Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1 states: Become imitators of me, even as I am of Christ.

He left us a fine example of preaching to people.

Luke 8:1 "Shortly afterwards he went journeying from city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him."

We go house to house imitating Jesus. He told us in Matthew 24:14 "And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come."
and Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying: “All authority has been given me in heaven and on the earth. Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

The Bible has such a marvelous message for everybody and the more you study the greater of a relationship you have with God. Why would anybody want to keep this information to themselves?

Well seeing that I started a JW left and am on my way back to becoming one again I can tell you from experiance that we preach the word of the lord for the sole pourpose of giving everyone the chance to hear the good word and to let people make thier own decisions about what we belive. Think of it as this, If you knew that you can only win the lottery once, you win it but then you find that you also know the winning numbers for the next one wouldnt you want to share that with someone? Whether its a family member or not, the JW's think of everyone as family so naturally we want to share hope, knowledge, and God with anyone willing to listen.

Jehovah's Witnesses are sincere Christians who firmly believe that God will soon destroy the world of wicked mankind (Psalm 37:9-11; Proverbs 2:21, 22). Thus, out of concern for their neighbors they actively try to help persons to come to an accurate understanding of the Bible and God's purposes. They are doing this in every nation on earth, not only in the United States. (Matthew 24:14) True, some people oppose them, but they do not allow such opposition to prevent them from helping others.

As your question indicated, Jehovah's Witnesses may make regular or repeated stops at a person's home. The reason for this depends on the situation. If they feel that you may be interested in learning more about the Bible, they will promptly return to help you to increase your interest in God's Word. Otherwise, Jehovah's Witnesses will make calls even on homes that were not interested, because often people move or their circumstances may have changed to where they may now have interest. Nevertheless, Jehovah's Witnesses, like God, value human life. So, they continually search for persons who want to know God; even if it means repeated tries.

As far as their preaching activity goes, Jehovah's Witnesses are known worldwide for their house to house work. Last year, over 6 million Witnesses spent over 1 billion hours speaking to others about God's Kingdom and what it will accomplish for mankind (please see Matthew 10:7)

This preaching work was foretold in the Bible at Matthew 24:14. Also, Jesus and his discliples were very zealous in preaching and speaking about God's Kingdom (Matthew 10:11-15; Acts 5:40, 42)

Thus, the faith that Jehovah's Witnesses have in God and His promises move them to speak to others. True faith, the Bible says, is accompanied by such action (James 2:14-17) Although the churches in general seem to simply 'go with the flow' of things, Jehovah's Witnesses are active Christians who promote Bible morality and a personal relationship with God.

I encourage you to listen to what they have to say. Ask them questions. Despite all the lies and slander that misinformed persons have spoken against these Witnesses, many individuals have found them to be very respectful people with exceptional knowledge and understanding of the Bible. Perhaps you have Bible questions that your church leaders have not been able to answer?

Here are some more scriptural reasons Jehovah's Witnesses preach from house to house:

Romans 10:13-15, 18
Matthew 28:19, 20
Acts 1:8
Matthew 11:1
1 Corinthians 9:16

They seem hell bent (sorry about the pun!) to convert all to their religion. I think it is a downright liberty to enter private property and not take no for an answer. I don't agree with pushing religion on to anyone in a private or public place outside of church. I am always polite but say I am not interested, point out to them that my daughter had two transfusions as a baby ( it's true) and then my piece de la resistance - I am a spiritualist. They usually beat a hasty retreat after that!

PBS has a documentary about JWs called Knocking. It's a look inside of a few of the brothers' lives - both of them dealing with serious issues. Look at it when you get a chance.

But, we're just ordinary people doing what we must. This is what Jesus and his father, Jehovah, commanded us to do. And we keep doing it because of Acts 5:29 says, "We must obey God as ruler rather than men."

It's what Jesus did in spite of persecution. Following his steps closely (as 1 Peter 2:21 advises) is our way of life. 1 Corinthians 9:16 says it all: "If, now, I am declaring the good news, it is no reason for me to boast, for necessity is laid upon me. Really, woe is me if I did not declare the good news!" We consider it a privilege to be counted worthy of such persecution. It's not always fun, but Read James 1:2 & 12 and you'll understand.

They do this because it is a commandment. Jesus foretold for our day this work:"This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations...He also instructed his followers:"Go...and make disciples of people of all the nations."--Matt. 24:14, 28:29.

When Jesus sent out his early disciples, he directed them to go to the homes of the people (Matt. 10:7, 11-13). Apostle Paul said regarding his ministry: "I did not hold back from telling you any of the things tha were profitale nor from teaching you PUBLICLY and FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE."--ACTS 20:20, 21..also Acts 5:42

Faith without works is dead, we must exercise faith...this means we are supposed to go door to door, we must DO what is commanded of us, we must do works, Gods will...JW are the only religion that takes heed to this commandment & doesnt overlook it to mean something else...that is why they come...

YOU SEE THE GUY THAT ANSWERED ABOVE ME DIDNT PUT IN THE WHOLE SCRIPTURE...WHERE IT SAYS "WHEN YOU ARE ENTERING INTO THE HOUSE GREET THE HOUSEHOLD..." than it goes onto say if anyone doesnt take YOU in or listen, move on....you see, if your gonna speak on something dont hold back & dont try to keep the truth from someone who wants to know the truth....very misleading, he doesnt know what hes talking about!

One JW put me off the whole lot of them he was so nasty, pulling someone up because they didn't write a sentence properly. He came across like a right pain in the neck, I would not let Nic Nac go knocking on any doors with his attitude, as he might come back with a black eye.

to jenkin1950 ~ we do not charge for our literature....Not a single penny. Maybe the people coming to your door are not Jehova's Witnesses. All material is always free and all discussions are welcome no matter where you live. The reason JW's go door to door is to share the good news of Jehova with everyone. If they are uninterested we go away. Simple as that.

I think they go to peoples homes, because that is where a person is more likely to respond. Think about it. If they try to talk to you at Walmart parking lot, aren't you more likely to be embarrased to be seen talking with them, if your not one of them. At home the person is more likely to relax and listen. One the job a person is on the bosses time, he can't listen then. They are persistant, because they know the importance of what they are doing. If they give up easily, then it would show they don't really care.
