A man was awarded nobility, heraldry, and the right to bear arms, and unless only knighthood, his son inherited usually by primogeniture. Not a family.
Nice picture ya got there.

Just because a coat of arms has a surname does not mean it belongs to everyone who has that surname.
There are no laws regarding heraldry in the United States and a person is free to display one if they wish but it is like putting up a picture of a famous person with their surname and claiming him as their direct ancestor whether they know he is or not.
Not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root. Many coats of arms have the same surname which means more than one individual was granted one.
There are about 200 for the surname Lewis.
That does not mean everyone with the surname Lewis is any way related to one of the almost 200 granted one much less be a direct male line descendant.
If this is a school project, maybe you should educate your teacher.
You can design your own if you wish.
There are companies in the United States and all over the internet that peddle coats of arms based solely on a surname. There is nothing illegal about it but it certainly isn't honest. Some, I understand, will do "research" and "link" you to a person granted a coat of arms.
The Anglo Saxon people of the American South, including people of humble means, have them in their family trees, frequently more than one. That does not mean they are entitled to one. However, some in the South have the ones their ancestors brought over from England 300-400 years ago. They don't display them. They can't buy groceries with them. In other words, they don't flaunt them. George Bush's royal ancestors were from Virginia.
However, there are people who buy them from coat of arms peddlers, based solely on their surname, and flaunt them and are not entitled to them.

All colors, pictures, and geometric shapes on a coat of arms symbolize personality characteristics that the original bearer wanted others to associate with his or her name. Perhaps the Pepper coat of arms found in the above links fit your personality, or just maybe you identify more with other symbols.
After looking at the links in previous posts and the link posted below describing the meaning of various heraldry devices, create your own modern coat-of-arms. For instance, if you like to play basketball, include a basketball on your device. After all, during the Middle Ages, when a knight was awarded a coat-of-arms, he made sure that the symbolism on it reflected the qualities he wanted to identify with himself.
I'm sure your teacher will like whatever you do provided that you explain what you have learned about coats of arms and the history behind their symbolism as well as the fact that only the descendants of the knight who was granted the Pepper coat of arms (who may--or may not--be your ancestor) have the privilege of displaying it.

I think this is what you’re looking for, but this is not necessarily your family crest. It simply means that some one once had the last name of Pepper and he was granted a Coat of Arms. CoA were never meant to be for a family, they were only given to individuals. I think I understand what you’re talking about though. I hope this is helpful.
