as long as it's a healthy snack and you don't go over your daily caloric allotment, it's fine to eat after dinner. it's best to not eat for 2-3 hours before bedtime to properly digest your food. you'll sleep better. have fruit or popcorn or a small bowl of healthy cereal. I like Weight Watchers ice cream for a snack.

Try to keep junk food out of the house. This doesn't mean that you can't have chocolate or other sweet things. There are tons of icecream bars & fruit popcycles made specially for the kids on the whole health kick. Check out the freezer section.

If you like fruit, keep a lot handy. Then if you do snack at night, it's not SO bad.

Quite often, people mistake boredom for hunger. Try doing something with your hands instead of eating. If you like to eat in front of the TV, don't. You can knit, pay bills (yeah, I know, fun right?) play cards, etc...
It also helps if you have an accountability partner. Tell someone close to you what you are trying to do. They can help you stick to your goal, and keep reminding you of it. (As long as you choose not to get annoyed.)
If worse comes to worse, just don't keep junk food in the house. It won't be as tempting.
