Tom Wolfe once said "Religion is just a cult with more political power." could not have said it better myself.

By definition yes all religions could be considered cults but most people of intelligence know that a cult in today's world is not a religion, but a sick person using religion to build a following for their own sick purpose, such as sexual or political power or statement.
Cults are dangerous, particularly to those who are naive, lonely and desparate for meaning to their lives. To trivialize good religious beliefs by calling them cults is to allow those which use and destroy people to acquire even more power over others.

nicely, all Christians branched off by using fact they had distinctive ideals and interpreted the preachings and Bible in any different case. they are united with Christ, yet are nevertheless very distinctive. Jesus did no longer have a decision, by using fact he replaced into Jewish in the past he died. He by no potential stated in the past he died "while you're taking communion like this, you're a Catholic. And in case you think of that when I stated that, you're Methodist. And a Lutheren is once you're saying this version of the Lord's Prayer." Jesus did no longer comprehend how surprising and staggering his movements have been and that Christianity could finally end up like this. He basically although he replaced into doing his duty to his Father.

Technically, yes, because the Latin word from which the term derived simply means a body of believers. That could refer to any group of worshipers, large or small. It's only in fairly recent historical times that the term has taken on such a negative connotation.

One man's religion is another man's cult. A religion is a cult that has attracted a lot of powerful followers.
You make a good point.

If by 'cult' you mean 'a group that isolates its members from nonmembers, has a central figure who is basically in control of the group, belittles them when they question their faith, and gets money from them', then some religions do qualify. Boy I'm glad mine doesn't. No leaders, no money collecting, no isolation (in fact it encourages members to question).

Yep. And even Jesus said that. Read Matthew 23. He says they make a person twice as fit for Gei-Hinnom. Shutting the Kingdom of Heaven in peoples' faces, neither entering themselves nor allowing those who wish to enter, to do so.

I tend to agree with you. By actually saying you are a (fill in the blank _____) you are by that very nature excluding everyone who is not that thing or belief. But ALL religion be it Christian, Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu etc. have basic principles to live by. Do not steal, cheat, lie, be jealous etc. If you were to just live by the principles alone, I think life would be pretty easy. It is only by "joining" or "naming" that it becomes suspect to me. Only my opinion. I try to live purely and in that, I feel a kinship to all beings, not just those who call themselves what I call myself. I hope this makes sense to you.

As the famous quote goes:
"When one person suffers from delusion it's called insanity. When many people suffer from delusion it's called religion."
