Yes. Major Depressive Disorder is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Don't let terms like "mental disorder" or "mental illness" scare you. Major Depression is a common and very treatable illness.

Well, since major depressive disorder can often lead to suicide, it's considered a fairly serious mental illness. It's like if depression were an infection, and something like schizophrenia is diabetes. An infection can be mild and go away on it's own, but it can also be extremely serious and life threatening, require immediate intervention. On the other hand diabetes is always considered a serious disease, however in the vast majority of cases it's treatable.

Yes, major depression is a mental illness, but it's worth keeping in mind that it can be a temporary condition like a broken leg. People don't label themselves if they happen to have a broken leg sometime in their lifetime, so there is no need to label yourself (or anyone else) who suffers from major depression. Major is well treated with medication and therapy. Don't be put off from anti-depressant medication by natural therapy nuts, if that is what gives you back your quality of life and gets you thinking straighter to help therapy work better. Sun Chlorella also helps build back up your nervous system. Although you have not asked for advice re treatment, I would encourage anyone to trial a few different things and find what works for them. Sometimes the first treatments don't work, and it is important keep trialling, coz every illness has a treatment Everyone a right to be well and have a happier time of things.

There is no difference between a "mental illness" and a "condition" except that a condition could refer to any type of health issue.
Yes, major depression is a mental illness, caused by an imbalance in the chemicals in the brain. Medications help to treat this problem. It is an illness just like diabetes or heart disease, except the organ that is affected is the brain tissue.

i have a major depressive disorder, bipolar, which is concidered a mental illnes. unfortunatly the term mental illness has attached a negative stigma, which people sometimes react to , such as when people with seizure disorders were concidered to be demon posesed . dont allow the stigma of having a mental illness discourage you from continuing treatment. with my "illnes" i have learned to find the silver lining that comes with the dark cloud, sometimes theres not much else to do. hope all goes well for you

It is an illness. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. So it technically is a physical illness. But the old schoolers treat it as mental illness because that the way it used to be.

Yes it is a mental illness, although the APA prefers to use the word disorder. You need to see a mental health counselor, you need to see your doctor for a physical to rule out a thyroid problem, and you need to go to the psychiatrist who the mental health counselor will suggest.

Yes, it is a mental illness, but nothing to be ashamed of. If you have seen a psychiatrist, they should have prescribed antidepressants. If you haven't, see one soon. I've heard that half the population is on some form of mood altering substance. You're not alone!
