To shorten your chain, you have to take out 2 links, you cant just take out one because they are male & female. IF you want to just fix the loose chain, you can do a couple other things. Move the rear tire back if there is room, or put a bigger sprocket on it. It will change the ratio of your bike, so you will have alittle more top end if you increase the teeth on the front, and more low end if you increase the rear..

There are 2 ways to do this:

1) loosen the back wheel, and move it towards the back of the bike to take up the slack in the chain. This will make the chain tighter. Be sure that when you tighten the bolts, that the wheel is straight in the frame, and turns freely without rubbing on the frame, cables, fender, etc. Also be sure that the gear on the wheel is aligned nicely with the gear on the pedals. You should be able to move the chain about 1/2 inch each way when the chain is properly taut.

2) Remove a link from the chain. Find the master link in the chain - this is one with a special, removable clip on one side. Remove the clip, and slide the link out to the other side, through the ends of the chain. Then you have to remove 1 link from one end, and reinstall the master link. Don't do this until after you try step 1, as there is no way to undo this once you remove the link.

If your chain is too long then you will need a chain breaker to take a link or two out.

There are various sorts of chain breakers here. (you can get them a lot cheaper than this.)

It could be that your chain is worn, in which case you will need to replaced the chain.

Pretty much all bicycle chains have a half inch pitch (two to a full link) measure a foot of chain if you have 12 full links and measure more than 12 1/8th (pin to pin) it is time for a new chain.

There is no reason that the chain would be loser. You have something wrong. What did you take off, check that first.
