Since he is prior service (Army) he isn't really treated very nice by his recruitment officer. We have some unanswered questions and I'm hoping I can get them here. How long will he be in "A" school for? What should be on his packing list? Since he's prior service he doesn't have to go to a full boot camp but a mini one instead. What will that be like? What does he need to pack for that? They also haven't disclosed his "A"school date is, all we know is that he leaves for the mini boot camp on June 11th. Is there anywhere we can find any this information out at? Also, I'm new to being a military spouse so any tips about anything, the life, the bases, the AT job for my husband, anything would be helpful, I feel lost in this military world. Thanks!

I was an AT!!
Does he know whether he will be intermesiate level or Organizational? (ATI or ATO?) Not sure about the "mini boot camp". ATI school is about 6 months in beautiful Pensacola Florida! ATO is somewhat shorter.
As an ATO he'd be up on the flight deck or in the hanger bay most of the time, working on the actual birds. As an ATI he'd be in an air conditioned space working on the components that the ATO's send him.
Let me know about mini boot... I'm thinking about getting back in when my kids are a little older!!
Oh, and one more thing... *if* you're willing to do the move yourself... there and to the next station (because the Nav will move you from where you are now, not P-cola) Several of the guys in my class actually lived off base with their families. They still had to do barracks duty, though. This was in '97.

Being prior Army your husband should know that all his information will be on his orders. Also his recruiter will give him the list of what he is allowed to bring anywhere. Do not assume just because he is prior service that he is special, be is still a Navy recruit. He will probably be going to TPU in Great Lakes, IL where they will issue all his uniforms and give him his boot camp traing for the Navy. It isn't a pleasant process but it never is when you enter or re-enter the military. DO NOT bring anything at all that he has not been told by his recruiter he can bring. They should give him a very limited list of what is ok to bring and that is it. Don't count on hearing from him right away either. He will call you for 2 minutes when he arrives there and that is it for a while.
AT school should still be in Pensacola, FL. Again he is in "A" school and will be treated as such. Being prior service he may get to be class leader but not much more authority. He will live in the BEQ and have to live with the same curfew and rules as his classmates. Then he will get more orders telling him where he will go next. At that point he will learn if you can join him right away or not. If he is going to a ship, do not travel with him or move all your stuff there until he has personally talked to his chain of command on the ship. If he is deploying soon it is better that you stay where you are at until he gets back. There is nothing worse than a new Navy family that moves to be by the memeber and the member ships out as soon as they get there and the wife is clueless about the area and the ways of the Navy. It is a steep learning curve if you have zero military experience. It will get better, but never assume anything that is your first lesson.

I'm sorry I can't speak to the treatment of your husband by the recruiters. I don't understand why they would treat anybody poorly who walked through their doors with the idea of joining.
"A" schools differ in length. Some are only a few weeks in length, some several months.
First "boot camp," Tooth brush, tooth paste, razor and shaving cream. When I went to boot camp... many years ago... they took everything else away and sent it home. They supply everything... at least in regular boot camp. I've never heard about a "mini boot camp." If you know where he's going for boot camp, you might contact Family Services on that base. You can find out just about anything you need to know... if you can visit him, how long the training is, they can probably even find out about his "A" school.
"A" School should be no problem. He'll have everything he's been issued in boot camp.
Again, Family Services at the base where his boot camp is, should be able to answer your question. There is also a group called The Navy Wives Club.
Thank your husband for me. There's an old WWII saying, "They also serve who stand and wait." So thank you too.

I would go with Navy Sailor's response. My husband just ended his recruiting duty and it's not an easy process when changing branches. And being prior military, your hubby should already know that nothing is every set in stone and orders can change.
So yea read Navy Sailor's response. It's the best and most detailed one on here.

he will inprocess at TPU in Great Lakes. he could be there a while before there are enough PS to start a new class, or he could get there and class up immediately. that's why he doesn't have follow on orders for A school yet.
A school for aviation is in Pensacola, 90% sure you will NOT be able to go with him.
he doesn't to need to bring ANYTHING to Great Lakes, anything he does will just be sent back. It will ALL be provided, even toiletries(that comes out of his first paycheck).

He needs to sit down with his recruiter and get this information. If the one he has can't get it for him, he needs to go up the line. Your husband with prior service more than understands the chain of command and I recommend he use it now.
