Kept in the dark by who? It seems as though there are plenty of people who are compelled to proselytize (or worse) for some god or other, against all evidence and reason.

I don't think they are, Atheists make a choice from the information they have, the same as anyone.
People make choices in their lives, based on how they think, feel etc..
