I am having the worst time picking a paint color for my den. my livingroom is attached with glass french doors (wood painted white) and we have picked BM Comet to paint that room and are going for the steel blue with chocolate brown look in that room. For my den with is mostly for the kids I wanted something bright and colorful but needs to not clash with livingroom color. My other problem is my den gets little or no direct sunlight so it is forever dark and always needs a light on so you can see. My floors is orignal maple colored hard wood. I was thinking a nice bright green, but I am worried about picking a color that will make the room darker then it already is. Does anyone have a suggestion on what colors will brighten a room without it being white or pale colors?
I have thought of an accent wall also. Thanks for any help you can give me. Autumn

Wow... I think you could go in many different directions with this one! There are so many colors that would compliment steel blue and chocolate brown. If the room in rather dark you are best to stick to lighter shades, but that doesnt mean they have to be pale or subdued. I think a rich yellow, minty green, dusty blue or even a light warm plum would be beautiful.

Here are some of my picks: (All Sherwin Williams colors, but you could match them easily to any other brand)

Humble Gold (SW 6308)
Bonsai Tint (SW 6436)
Watery (SW6468)
Rain (SW 6219)
Veiled Violet (SW 6268)

Hope that helps! Good luck! Sounds like it will be beautiful.

1] paint the room a bright color of your choice [ sage or jade green, banana or golden yellow, cantelope or coral ] up to a chair rail, and paint the top ivory or white.
2] use a valance only for curtains, or just paint ivy around the window frame, as well as the french doors. Add extra ceiling lights or install track lighting around the room.
3] add some book cases [ one for books, one for games, etc. - maybe on either side of the doors? ]; some 'milk crates'
in bright colors so: blocks go in blue crate, dolls go in green crate, cars/trucks go in red crate, and so on.
4] provide a trunk for dress up time - princesses, cowboys,
etc.

You might try a light mint green which will brighten but not be overpowering...also you might think of a mural of some sort that would bring several colors into the room and kids love murals of forests with animals or the beach which has lighter color scheme than forests...you can go to www.rowdysunsetart.com and see some of the ones I did for my patio it really brightened a small dark patio up....hope it helps

Your house sounds kind of like ours with similar colours - ours is chocolate brown and blue with a reddish orange, a medium, but bright terra cotta kind of shade. Looks fabulous! I also think green would work, but a bright green - more like lime green.

Take your colors to a paint shop and have them help you.
