By potent I mean: which opiate has the greatest effect with the lowest dose? I've always assumed it was Fentanyl, but I've never known for a fact. Please don't just answer with "Oxycontin" or "Heroin". Give me a little bit of information on how you know what you know. thanks people! - Dylan

Not counting investigational drugs, sufentanil is the most potent opiate. It also has the highest affinity for the mu opiate receptor.

Used clinically, it is given in microgram doses.

Here's an article that goes no a little about opiates in anesthesia:

Many people I've known have said that the more concentrated the opiate medium is, the stronger the effect eventually becomes. In other words, Opium Tar < Morphine < Heroin etc.

I'm under the opposite impression. I think that the less you mess with it, the stronger the initial chemical chain is, thus the more effective smaller doses are, supposing that you're able to actually ingest the entire dose correctly, and digest the dose effectively.

I'll chew on some poppy flowers tonight and give this more thought.
