You should wash it as often as it gets dirty and greasy looking. Since it is so long, you can just scrub the scalp and the hair closest to your head daily or every other day and then the rest of your hair twice a week. While rinsing your hair, the shampoo from your scalp will wash down over the long hair and take any dirt with it. Make sure that you use a good conditioner to keep it smooth, shiny and make your comb outs easier. Use the conditioner only on the bottom 3/4 of your hair. You don't need to use it on your scalp, unless you have some dry scalp problems. Pantene makes very good products if you want to purchase from a drug store. If you don't mind spending a little extra money, try the Matrix line. You do need to keep the ends trimmed to keep the split ends at bay. So it might not hurt for you to get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.

If you have an oily scalp, you can shampoo everyday. Just be sure to emulsify the shampoo in your hands & focus on your scalp, then run the lather briefly through the rest of your hair.
If you don't have an oily scalp, then you can try shampooing every 2-3 days & just rinse your hair well in between.
1) Apply conditioner to the ends of your hair after every shampoo.
2) Allow your hair to air dry as often as possible & use a super absorbant microfiber towel to cut down drying time. (e.g. The Body Shop or Aquis)
3) Use a wide tooth comb after shampooing to remove tangles starting at the ends of your hair and working your way up. Never use a brush on wet hair - it's most prone to tearing when wet.
4) Don't use rubber bands to put your hair in a pony tail - they will tear your hair. Use smooth elastic bands made for hair.
5) Trim split ends regularly. You can go to a salon or DIY. (Section hair while dry. Twist a section & use very small scissors to trim splits that stick out. e.g. baby or cuticle scissors)
Good products: Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo to remove product build up every 1-2 weeks.
Joico K-Pak conditioner can be used daily or as a deep conditioning mask.
A bit of jojoba oil run through the ends of your hair will tame frizziness and add a bit of sheen. It is non-comedogenic & washes out easily.

In regards to shampooing - it depends on your hair - If it doesn't get that greasy, then I would wash it every other day. I would invest in good products - Redken is my favorite, or KMS. And always use conditioner.
I would also recommend, if you don't already, that you go for regular trims - I would say every 8-10 weeks - keeps the hair healthy, and gets rid of any split ends :)

You should only wash you hair every other day. Deep condition it once a week and sleep with it braided. You should try to get it trimmed about every other week to keep dead ends from preventing new growth. FYI: It looks sexier if it only reaches about the middle of your back. Anything longer than that makes you look obsessed with your hair. Cut a bit off and you look like you are just blessed with great hair. Don't be afraid to wear it down sometimes. Good Luck and God Bless!

You should wash it twice a week, at least, and get a good conditioning spray, for when you brush/comb it, to help detangle it, so it doesn't break.
I like to use Pantene Pro-V products, including the shine serum, the leave in conditioners and the ice shine shampoo/conditioner. I recomend playing around, to see what products work best for you, since everyone is different.
