My dog has his home in the back yard in a big fenced kennel. But the grass is completely gone and it is just mud since it has been raining. What would be good to put back there that will make the grass grow back thick like it was?. I want him to have lots of thick grass because he loves rolling around in it. Now he looks like a muddy pig.

I feel your pain, I hav e4 dogs and I have a small patch of grass left. LOL It is very hard to have nice grass, if any at all, when you have large or medium size dogs. I have laid new sod last year (that lasted about 2 months and it was mud again), I throw grass seed down every Saturday, still...... no grass. It is awful because it has rained here for the past 7 days and my poor dogs look like pigs too. AND i have white carpet, so like I said, I FEEL YOUR PAIN. At my last house i had decorative stepping stones (about the size of a 10X10 tile) put in my yardto create a walkway. They used it too. It helped my grass a lot. I am investing in them again next weekend and then I am laying sod AGAIN. This does not elliminate the problem completely, but it helps tremendously. Right now my back yard looks like a Louisiana swampland. My dogs hate the wet grass, so when they have stone paths to move around on, they take full advantage of it. Hope this helps.

Your going to get a bag or 2 of seed and spread it over your yard. To speed up the growth put fertilizer with it. Until the grass is well rooted don't play in the back yard. Go to a local park that is what they are there for.

If you could find a place for your dog to be for a few weeks then get some grass seed. Even out your soil with a rake, spread a lot of new grass seed (heavy traffic seed), and re-rake it and cover it with hay. Water it several times a day and you should have new grass in a few weeks. Might want to check into astro-turf too if you can't temporarily move your dog.

Well the more the dog is in there the more the grass will die, due to him being in a confined space and having to walk back and forth in it. Try walking him more because that way the grass has a chance to grow and try planting seeds or the grass you can but at a nursery or such. oh also please go to this site it can help answer alot of those simialer questions:

We had the exact same problem.
What we did was move our dogs to a different area and replanted the whole area that was grassless.
We used the Scott's Patch Master because it has everything in one bag.
Yes, it was tedious, but I'm happy with the results we got.
It took about a month to get a good growth on the new grass.
I also found something called "Dog Patch" at Menards that is supposed to be for the bald patches that dog urine causes.
Good luck!

Put fertilizer down to make it grow back or buy fake grass patches that way it will never die.
