Id love to do it as a side job.

I am a Certified Wedding Specialist. There are courses (Home Study) that you can take. I personally took a course through Weddings Beautiful -it's an Association that is a part of the National Bridal Service. The course was about $500 and you go at your own pace. There is also another association called ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants). They also offer a wedding consultant course. Both associates offer membership within there organization an offer seminars and courses (in different locations) throughout the year.

It's a misconception that anyone can be a consultant. Technically anyone can but it gives you an edge if you have a certification behind you. It's like the difference between saying your a doctor and being a licensed doctor. There's more to it. You have to have an understanding of etiquette, working with vendors, working with brides, working within different budget levels and have a creative mind to boot. You can definitely do it as a side job to start out. I currently do. It's the kind of thing that you can set your own hours so don't let that discourage you. Start building a portfolio of work so you can show people and subscribe to a few wedding magazines. They will help you keep up with current wedding trends etc. Check out the links below and good luck.

It's not hard to become one. I imagine it's hard to become a GOOD one. And there aren't part-time wedding planners. It's a full time all encompassing profession. Just cuz you want to end your day at 5 doesn't mean the brides do.
Try to get yourself a position working under an established wedding planner... as an assistant or something. There's a lot more to it than you think.

Coming from a wedding professional IMO it's Very hard to be a good one. You need to know what a couple are saying and then what they are meaning. You need to narrow the field for them so they have maybe 3 of each vendor who meets their needs and budget for them to see, you need to know the differences in levels of service and why they might want to spend more money or time on one thing or less on another - You need to know this for EVERY service they require. You need to educate them as to the questions they will ask different vendore before hiring them - You need to know this for EVERY service they require. You need a black book of vendors you can call in an emergency. You need to know how the vendors interact and how to help them do their job - not hinder them as bad planners do. You need to have a plan B for anything and everything that might go wrong. You need to be a therapist before the day, be good at finding the middle ground for the families, the couple, the bridal party,

Most importantly you need to keep everything running on time on the wedding day or they are out of something they paid for and you look inept and the venues won't recommend you.

It's not a side job...it's a job. At least if you're going to do it well, it's a full time job. It's not incredibly difficult, however the hard part is getting clients, and working with suppliers/vendors.

Not hard. I did it. You have to start working for a hotel or established company.

Actually, I just saw it in the community college course listing book they mailed out.. Its just one corse but they break it down and show you how....Look up your local community college for help
