The signs of depression (try www.webmd.com) include withdrawl from family, friends and social situations; crying, lack of appetite; physical pains that are not related to illness; exposive anger for no known reason.

What do you think caused your Mom's depression? Did she lose a friend, a job, get a divorce, find out her spouse had an affair, etc.? Has she had a phsyical recently because physical illness that is not treated can cause depression.

If you feel your Mom is depressed, you should talk to a close relative or your Dad (if available). Or you can talk to your Mom about your concern.

Counseling and the use of mood elevating medications are very successful but the person who is depressed must be the person to reach out. You cannot force a person to seek hellp.

Good luck.

People who're depressed are more commonly extra inactive than common, so they might appear like they have got been napping plenty. Maybe darkish circles beneath the eyes. Maybe yawning plenty. The means you'll consider after sitting in entrance of the TV all day. They do not care as so much approximately their look, so a lady who used to decorate and decorate cautiously, spend plenty of time on hair and make-up, however now does not, it would be for the reason that of melancholy. I could feel a quite depressed man or woman could appear on the flooring plenty. They could no longer get outside as so much so they might appear quite light. Stuff like that. Lack of eye touch is a well bet too.

Emotional (getting angry/upset/sad for silly little reasons)
Not wanting to go out, or be surrounded by noise/people
Withdrawing
Loss of appeteit
Lost interest in appearance
Lost the will to live
Your mum could be suffering of depression (but depression happens over a period of time), she could also merely be overstressed as it can come accross as depression too. If she shows signs of being suicidal then it's depression and she needs professional help.

Low mood.
Loss of appetite (or sometimes eating more)
Not sleeping or sleeping too much.
Early morning waking.
Anhedonia (nothing makes her happy)

Those are the typical ones but there is no typical depressive so she may be depressed even if she doesn't fit the symptoms above.
