I would go to a gunshop and try out the Ruger, SIG, Glock, S&W, and what other ones they have. See which one fits your hand the best and the controls are the easiest for you to operate.

Now if we are talking the absolute "best" I would have to say an STI http://www.stiguns.com/, Brazos Custom http://www.brazoscustom.com/Home.htm, SVI http://www.sviguns.com/, or some other type of double stack 1911. As for combat handguns I would choose a sig, glock, or h&k. I own three glocks in 40 a 22, 23, and 35, and they all preform well. I also have a sig 226r in 9mm and got rid of my usp compact 40 cause I hated the mag release. I would suggest a glock, sig, or h&k those are the best brands. The springfeild xd is also taging along strong but I wouldn't go there yet since it hans't been around long enough. I read an article once that the usp compact in 40 is more accurate then the sig 226, 229, and the usp2000. I definately think both are better made then glocks but I compete and carry glocks for a different reson. I would suggest holding and dry firing the three to see what feels best to you. However if you have the money you can't beat a 1911 and it doesn't have to be a $1800 gun like I sent you. Kimber makes a few 40's and I believe springfeild only makes one in 40. But for single stack 1911 I'd go with 45acp anyway.

There are tons that would fit the bill
Glock 22 or 23
HK USP
SIG 226
SIG PRO
S&W M&P
Beretta 96
Taurus 24/7
Steyr M
Those are some popular choices, there are many others out there though. Go down to a range and see if some guys will let you buy them some ammo and put a mag or two through theirs and find which one you like best. There's no such thing as any one of these pistols that's way above and beyond the others, it's hugely a matter of personal preference.
Like the person above me said though, for home security a shotgun is by far your best choice. At the short ranges involved in such situations the shotgun can't be beat - huge stopping power, easy to aim, limited penetration so you won't have rounds flying through walls or out into the streets. Go buy one of the ultra powered Surefire flashlights, mount that on and then anyone caught in it is blind.

You will get as many different answers as there are shooters and weapons....
I do like the .40S&W as a defense round (though not necessarily for indoor) for the fact that it compares with the .357 Magnum, where as the .45 doesn't.
.40S&W...155gr. @1200 fps yields 500 ft/lbs
.357 Mag..158gr. @ 1240 fps yields 540 ft/lbs
.45 Auto....230gr. @ 875 fps yields 391 ft/lbs
I like my Taurus 24/7 Pro, the grips are excellent micro-ribbed rubber, picatinny rail, DA/SA and it was cheaper than most brands. Even for that , it still groups 2" at 25yd, so I can't complain.
Hope you figure out what you want, but you should buy a riot gun for home defense anyway. 00 buck doesn't hit your neighbors....

You really ought to take a look at 45ACP instead of 40 cal as the ammo is in more plentiful supply and considerably less expensive; not to mention it does a better job. Taurus and EEA make excellent pistols that are reliable and fun to shoot; at reasonable prices. You can spend as much money as you want on them. For home defense I would recommend a 12 Ga double or pump; you can use 6 or 7 shot and not have to worry about hitting your neighbor three houses away.

My favorites, in order, are: The EAA witness, in any of their models, one of the Sig Sauer models, or the Smithand Wesson M&P.
The witness is plain Jane, but reliable and the best pointing guns I've ever handled, Sig sauer for features and reliability, and the M&P for ergonomics and nearly nonexistant recoil.

12 gage pump is the best home defense weapon going. Remington, and Winchester make the best home defenders. 20'' barrels, 6-8 rounds, wont jam, and does not miss, and will not go into friends walls next door. the handguns are for outside of home defense.

Any Glock compensated .40 cal. The compensated barrel allows less recoil for faster and more accurate shots.

I have shot both the CZ-75B SA .40SW and the Glock 22. These guns are strictly business in my opinion. .40SW is a great combat round-period. Nothing else.
