if your car is a manual trans changing oil dont do nothing, if it slips on 5th gear (on manual trans) that is a bad sable, fork or pinion oil only lubricate thats all
if it a auto trans(in easy words) you have serious problems because oil pushes the trans forward, if change the oil that new oil came with a big amount of detergent that clean your trans but all dust will go to minor parts making your trans dont do nothing
if your trans is auto it suppose to have a dipstick in red somewhere
if your trans is a manual(stands at the front of the car) theres a bolt at the front of the car behind the radiator you have to fill it until oil came out or see for the speedometer thing in some cars thats the dipstick
OUR BEST ADVICE IS go for a good mechanic and pay for a good service or leave the car like that because you can GET IT WORSE

You should put a bucket under it so you dont let the fluid go all over the ground, but if your wanting to put the transmission fluid back into the same hole you would have to flip your car over... dont do that. just get a funnel and and some more trans. fluid and pour it in the hole under your hood.

Look around the engine compartment for a dipstick that says transmission or trans fluid on it--that's where you put in the transmission fluid as well as check the level--don't overfill it.

umm...you should really just resort to walking for now...or a bike...until you save up a little more money to take it to a mechanic. first, you need to know exactly what trasmission fluid you need. second, you fill it from the top.

Yeah, gravity is like that, I would get a bucket to drain it., and fill it from the top.

I think your time would be better spent calling AAA, not posting questions to Yahoo! Answers.
