Dogs and cats have rods and cones in their retinas but in a different proportion than in the human retina. Although they can differentiate colors, what they see is likely a more muted version of what we see. Dogs, especially, probably see more shades of gray than they do all of the individual colors.

Cats, by the way, can concentrate small amounts of light in their eyes, which allows them to see at night when the rest of us have difficulty. This special talent gives them their extraordinary night hunting vision.

There are a lot of people who think that cats are colorblind, but haw do you prove it without looking through the cat's eyes? You can't. I like to think that they can see in color just like you and me. But, I'm no scientist.

They have color vision but in a somewhat different range from humans. As to how well--just watch them stalking some small prey outdoors!

NO THEY CAN SEE COLORS. AND THEY CAN SEE VERY WELL AT NIGHT.

EVER NOTICE THAT THEY LIKE TO PLAY AT NIGHT THEN IN THE DAY?

AND ALSO LOOK AT THERE EYES WHEN THEY ARE IN THE DARK.

THEY GET BIGGER FOR EXCELLENT SEEING. AND HUNT VERY FAST AND GOOD CAUSE THE EYES ARE GOOD.

I HAVE 5 CATS HAD THEM FOR 5 YRS NOW.

BTW, this was my answer to Cali Girl:

Cats are not color blind - they have the ability to distinguish between blues and greens, but lack the ability to pick out shades of red.
