When my doctor gave me the antibiotics prescription, I asked her if I could drink b/c I had a wedding and two big parties to go to during the time I was supposed to take it. She freaked me out and said "No!, you could have liver failure! DO NOT DRINK! So, I didn't drink but then 2 of my friends (one who is a dentist, the other is a PA) said that it would be okay if I just had a glass of wine...just one would be all right. I don't know who to trust...I don't know if the doctor was just being dramatic or if I really should not drink. It's not that big of a deal for me to not drink for 2 weeks b/c I rarely drink, I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this.

well, the doctor told me it was an antibiotic so I just listened to her.

I don't know what is so stupid about asking my friends, one of which is a doctor...yes maybe a dentist but they still need to know about EVERYTHING in the body. Also, a PA is pretty much a doctor. Get off your high horse....

Anyway, I just asked my friends their opinion that's all...I was just curious to see if my doctor was just being extra doctor-like b/c obviously they are going to tell you not only what is true but what they are "supposed to tell you"..

Your doctor was absolutely correct! Lamisil is a very strong anti-fungal drug and it sounds like you are taking it internally. Your doctor probably requested a blood test for you before prescribing it. This is done to see if there are any problems with the liver. Since you are taking it, the blood test must have turned out fine. Follow your doctor's advice and stay away from all alcoholic beverages while you are taking this medicine.

before embarking on such a course of action, do check with your own doctor, in case there are any complicating personal factors that neither of us are aware of. The effects of certain antibiotics will be reduced when taken in combination with alcohol and as a rule, one should avoid combining alcohol with any medication. The extent to which each dose of any drug reaches its site of action may be termed its availability. Alcohol can influence the effectiveness of a drug by altering its availability. A single drink of alcohol or several drinks over some hours may prevent a drug's metabolism by competing with the drug for the same processing sites within the liver. This type of interaction prolongs the drug's availability, and may increase the risk of side effects from the drug. On the other hand, chronic alcohol abuse may cause an increase in the liver's ability to process the drug, thus decreasing availability and reducing its effects. This effect may persist for several weeks after stopping drinking. To complicate matters further, a drug may affect the way in which alcohol is broken down, increasing the risk of becoming intoxicated.

Lamisil is an anti-fungal, NOT an antibiotic.

It can cause liver problems for some people, and so alcohol can exacerbate that risk. As the saying goes: 'Better safe than sorry' -- Don't drink.

Lamisil is an anti fungal-yeast- not an antibiotic. You should cut out sugar including alcohol when taking antifungal medicine so it can do its job, sugar feeds yeast.

when your body is processing medication (i.e. antibiotics) you should allow your body to process it completely. When you throw in alcohol, you body processes the alcohol INSTEAD & your body wi eliminate most (if not all) of the medication without reaping the medical benefits of the medication. You will essentially be wasting your time to take the meds if you opt to drink while taking them.
