Whats the best way to meet someone when you've recently relocated?

Example: Let's say you've moved to a completely different city and state and have no friends or immediate connections there.

Join a singles group. Take a hobby class. Choose a favorite restaurant that has a lot of regulars and frequent there. Invite your neighbors over for a BBQ or have a meet and greet block party. Hang out in communal places around your neighborhood. One thing you definitely cannot do is sit in your house and be bored,miserable, and lonely. You have to be out and about to meet people.

Other than that, become involved in groups, churches, clubs, any organization where you might meet someone.
Of course, there are chance encounters, such as eating at a cafe, walking down the street, shopping.
Avoid the internet, except for the reputable sites.
