If it was a strong, good white woman who consented to the sex, she owned up to her decision and was probably disowned by her family, church, and community.
Rarely did the couple live together as a family, as that would cause strife for the black man in a disapproving white world. Unless of course, they lived in the sticks and raised their family away from much of the city.
If she wanted to preserve her honor to marry a white man one day, she cried rape, gave the baby up and "pretended" to be scared of blacks for the rest of her life. The white family would then look away from her "indiscretion".
The baby was raised by a black family or killed to hide the truth.

There is no controversy-- Vogue magazine and the Associated Press went out to stir up a controversy and it still hasn't happened! Why would there be controversy when Black men and white women (and visa versa) have been with each other for years? I guess when you put a photo on a magazine for white teen girls, they are supposed to be so impressionable that they start running after Black men? I will say that it would have been nice to see the first Black man on the cover of Vogue in a suit, with or without the white female.

Sadly, it was thought down on. A lot of times they were sent away to have the baby and a life of isolation from the rest of the world or they were forced to put the little one up for adoption.
My great grandmother was talking to me about her best friend growing up got pregnant when she was 15 by a black man (he was Virgil) and rather than telling her parents she ran away with him and they had a long happy life together. I met them once and they were an extremely sweet couple. I always thought that was so romantic. :)

As to what happened to the black man or the white woman, it partly depended upon location!
Generally speaking, the white woman was banished from her hometown/family and shunned. Her name would be stricken from people's memories, as if she had never existed.
In any case, there were rare exceptions wherein things worked out.

the babies were either killed, or given to a black family or very rarely, just kept hidden. the black man was either beaten or killed, and as for the woman, she was shunned for going outside her race and marked for the rest of her life, or, like alot of women, swore she was raped and caused a lynch mob against the unfortunate man she had a child with. it really was a sad, sad situation.

In most cases the women put the child up for adoption. It was just not heard of for the birth mom to raise the child. In many cases the child would be stuck in an orphanage and would grow up believing they were not wanted.
