i go to a custom tattoo artist and everything he does is his own work. of course he uses the internet for references, like when doing my turtle he wanted a realistic color scheme so he looked to see what color scheme that particular turtle has for a shell and skin but he never uses ideas off of the internet to base a tattoo on.
tattooers who do that aren't artists, they are just tattooers.

I think there is a point where if it's too ornate they should find it and trace it to make it what you want so that it doesn't get screwed up. But if the artist can't draw say ... a cherry blossom I wouldn't really trust their skill level as much. For me it depends on what they are looking up and why. My artist went online to confirm the character they had on their wall since I had found something different. Turns out I was wrong- I'm glad he checked. I am going back to the same shop for my next tattoo. I love their work. Find the right shop and you shouldn't have any problems trusting the artist. Rock the body art!

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. I do not have a tattoo. Never wanted one. If I can't change it like a shirt when I get tired, it is not for me. However, I have desinged many tattoos and actually did one. I designed a rose tattoo in a very specific way for this one guy. And he either could not find anyone he felt comfortable to do it on him. So he convinced me to do it. He had the equipment to do it, and he knew I never tattooed anyone, but he knew I could draw, and I was the creator of the design. It came off OK. "WHEW" Which got me interested in maybe doing it as a career. And what I have learned, off the net, conventions etc. Is to get the best tatts is to tell the tattoo artist what yur overall concept is and let him create it. Then you have a tattoo that is custom built for your body and NO ONE ELSE has it. So someone getting it off the Internet and having it also is near impossible. I feel you.

For the tattoos I have, I've either had the image already, or I've came in with the idea and they drew it up. Certainly I wouldn't want an exact copy of someone else's tattoos, but I think if the artist is looking for ideas, then that's great. Especially if you are sitting with the artist, talking about what you liked and didn't, so you can compile ideas into what makes your tattoo you.
I'm currently thinking out a back piece, and if the artist had no idea of what exactly it was that I wanted *A sphinx, but not the egyptian piece, with some words around it*, I would hope she/he would look it up to get a well rounded idea of what I wanted before he/she started sketching the piece.

I've never seen a tattoo artist look something off the net.... Either you pick a design off the wall or have them create something from your imagination as you explain it or draw it and they perfect it they way you want. Yes, original tattoos are so much better then "wall" or i guess you would say "net" tattoos..... I love the tattoo on my ankle, my best friend who is in art school did a rough sketch and the tattoo artist polished it off and did the color shading as i requested. It is awesome!!

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (folks singer) I even have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed throughout my feet, with a tigerbat above the feet on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a pair extra musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed around the again of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric around the insides of each hands (It's lovely I might say... I do not need it another approach.) I'm considering a scorching-rod tradition tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta decide on the lyric to move within the banner even though. As it stands in these days, I'd mainly opt for "In loss of life as in lifestyles, I will come up" or "My moral sense contains the load of blood."

I always get unique art done, and most of the stuff on the net thats of what i want, isnt in the style i want. So i either do the design myself, or i get my artist to change up the design to how i want it. But my artist doesnt really like copying someone elses design off of such an open forum, he has a unique style, and prefers to do his own design, same with flash art, his studio walls are covered in his own versions of the flash art he finds, he does have the originals in a folio, but all the stuff in his studio on main display, is his own take on them. Hes an old school artist, so the almost prefab, unmeaningful tribal isnt to his taste, nor is the cartoony stuff, or the standard sticker style girly stuff.

I pay for custom work, which is what I expect to get. My artist draws everything by hand, and only does custom work (you can bring your own work in and he will do it, but he doesn't keep flash in his shop)
I don't see how taking a pic off the net is any different for the customer than choosing a piece of flash. (Different for the artist, since they don't have to pay for the image off the net). But if you went in and asked for a custom piece, then they used flash....that would be an issue and an artist I would never visit again.

a real tattoo artist wouldn't look up a design on the net. I've gone to artist that create their own design, and the usually have a portfolio for you to look at with all of their designs.

No they are just trying to get ideas or get the design right. I don't like the tattoo artist to freehand on me because I have a general idea of what it will look like but you can't know for sure 100% until it's done. It's a little too nerve wracking for me.
