My hubby's company just went international, and he's been tentatively approached about moving to Singapore to set up the IT department. They're thinking it would be a 2 year appointment.

We, however, speak English, with a very basic smattering of Spanish. Would we survive on English, or will we learn a new language really REALLY quickly?

Thanks for your help! :-)

Singapore is a former English colony and a great percentage of Singaporeans speak English. Their native language is Malay. They have great pride as an independent country and they are extremely liberal and highly educated. They are not extremists when it comes to professing to Islam, no one wears a veil and they are almost more British than oriental. In the British colonies, and Singapore was one, the British emphasised the need for the education of the locals and when their colonies gained independence the newly independent governments did not forget the positive aspects of colonialism. You will feel at home there and you will have no problem surviving your experience in Singapore at all. It will be an educational experience you will remember and cherish for the rest of your life.

The main languages of Singapore are English, Malayan, Tamil and two dialects of Chinese Mandarin and Hokkien. English will definitely get you by in Singapore since Singapore is a former British colony and English is well-known there. Nowadays, English will even get you by in countries like Japan and the Philippines too.

Seems like everybody speaks English in Singapore. Only you have to get use to their accent.
However, there are other spoken languages there: Mandarin (Chinese), Malay, Hindi.
