There is nothing wrong with protecting the environment. There is something wrong with taxing carbon output which will make our industries less competitive. Jobs would be lost. If there was very little benefit from extreme cost (from 100 billion to 250 billion per year to implement Kyoto, not including lost wages and stagnating economy) then there is harm. Trying to turn our society away from consumption, market forces, and prosperity is harm whether you recognize it or not. What you don't understand, is that the environmental movement is now the home to socialists. They hide their agenda by saying it is good for the environment. Who could oppose clean air and water? Don't fall for it. Their socialist agenda would rob us of our freedom and wealth.

Nothing, except this is going to cost us taxpayers billions of dollars. All the senators will pass bills to build massive ''green'' everything factories. They will fight over in which state this one goes and which state that one goes, all so they can each get a piece of the billions. They will build these plants and they will cost ten times what they said. But don't worry, the taxpayers will pick up the tab. Half the factories will end up causing more pollution than if they did nothing, of course we won't find this out until the factory is completed (and many multimillion dollar studies are done!). The other half will also run over budget, but for one reason or another they will never even finish them. If you were a little older I'm sure this would sound all too familiar!
Whatever you can do in your daily routine to help the Earth is good. You are right when you say ''What harm could come from trying to protect the enviornment? What's wrong with that?'' In fact , there is nothing wrong with that.

Nothing's wrong with trying to protect the environment. Who really knows if global warming is happening or not, but I know I don't want to take the risk and do nothing. More harm could come of not doing anything, I know I don't want my daughter to inherit a damaged Earth.

Jim z,
"There is something wrong with taxing carbon output which will make our industries less competitive. Jobs would be lost."
You know, Jim z, you aren't competitive now. You can't sell American cars where the environmental standards are higher then in the U.S. And how well is the automobile industry doing in America? The point of taxing it is not so they will pay the tax but to give an incentive for starting to develop cars that emit less CO2. This will make them competitive overseas as well. It's true that some parts will be less profitable, but there will be many new opportunities too. I think the main argument is the oil companies being afraid of competition.

You mean other than causing the death of millions in the 3rd world.. and destroying the economies of the industrialized world?
There's a very fine line that has to be walked here.
And Anders, the automobile business is going on just great in the US. Perhaps you're unaware that Japanese automobile manufacturers produce most of their cars for the US market in the US?

Global warming IS happening... like you say, we should be trying to conserve and help, but all the damn politicians just want to sit around and vote on whether it exists... ok it exists... is it bad?... ok its bad... should we do something about it?... ok we should... and they vote repeatedly, but nothing is done. there was a docuent signed by hundreds of scientists that talks about what we need to do. i think there are over 80 of them that have won the nobel prize and STILL the government spends money on stupid things, like going to the moon (so that we can see that there is no life on it, even though anyone on earth could tell them that already) instead of research into solar paneling or other ways to push america back into the green...

Global warming is happening. And yes, we are a major cause (it is scientifically proven, and over 90% of scientists agree). Yes, we need to be conserving our environment. All those people who think otherwise are head cases. They need to screw their heads on correctly, look at the facts, and get their butts moving.

I agree. Why don't they want to 'conserve'? It's part of the word they define themselves by.
