I was just wondering if anyone knows WHERE the actual written prescriptions go after you turn them in at a pharmacy? Does the doctor get them back? Does the pharmacy keep them on file? Or do they just get thrown away?? I was just curious to know exactly WHERE they end up after they have been filled and picked up? Thanks for any help you can give! :)

Ok... so there is NO CHANCE of them getting "sent through the mail" back to the doctor and getting STOLEN along the way or anything, right?? I have just been put on narcotics for chronic pain recently and have heard MANY horror stories about those type of prescriptions being stolen, tampered with and altered. I dont want that to happen to ME and I would just like to know what happens to them for my PEACE OF MIND!! Thanks to all who can help! :)

the "hard-copy" prescription is the property of the pharmacy once it is filled. Therefore it remains in control of the pharmacy for 7 years until they can be destroyed.

When I worked in a pharmacy, we kept the prescriptions on file for so many years (I'm thinking five or ten, but I can't remember for sure). Then we had to write away to some higher authority (I can't remember who) to get permission to destroy them. It was a real pain in the ***. I worked for a state-ran pharmacy though. It might be different for a privately owned pharmacy.

Your prescriptions are stored by the pharmacy. After about 5 years, they are destroyed. For a year, they are stored at the physical pharmacy, and after that, they are sent to a storage facility.
