I'm sure it's possible. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus. After getting chicken pox, the virus lies dormant in the body. Shingles occurs when the virus "wakes up" (usually due to stress OR immune deficiency). It attacks the nerve endings, which is why it's so dang painful. That's why you'll see shingles follow a "path"....usually a nerve trunk-line. They're miserable, for sure, but mine were stopped dead in their tracks by an anti-viral medication. Seriously --- new blisters that were forming just STOPPED. So take the medication, as prescribed, and take it ALL. (Don't stop just because you're feeling better.) Shingles CAN re-occur, though, because it's still in your body.

Don't despair!! You'll be amazed at how such a painful, ugly condition can be completely stopped. (No scars, either, for me!! Couldn't BELIEVE that!) Try not to stress out too much, because that makes it worse.

EDITED TO ADD: The Valtrex will do the trick. DON'T use cream!! It will irritate and spread them. Once the Valtrex reaches a certain level, it will STOP the spreading, and STOP new blisters from occurring. You'll be amazed at how the itching will end so quickly. Just hang in there, and take those pills.

I never heard of shingles in such a large portion of the body.
Usually you get them on the left or right side of your chest.
Yes, they are painful, and itch, make sure you do not scratch
them as this will spread them even more.
The doctor should have gave you medication for the itching,
as I begin to wonder what kind of doctor you went to. if any.
There are no antiviral medications, but they use medications to make you comfortable until it takes its course.
I would recommend that you go see another doctor because it doesnt sound like shingels, and the fact that he didnt give you something for the itching. take care.
