Hepatitis C can progress to cirrhosis and end stage liver disease in some people. However, there is no way to predict who will go on to cirrhosis & ESLD, and who won't . The good thing is your cousin is doing the treatment. There is a 50-80+% chance the treatment will clear the virus, depending on which genotype she has. Even if it doesn't work, doing the interferon treatment can improve the damage to the liver (research has shown interferon can cause histologic improvement ). Treatment is a mild form of chemotherapy, so the symptoms your cousin has are typical (low red blood cell count, low white count, flu like symptoms, fatigue). If her red & white blood cell counts fall below a certain level, there are other medications she can take that will boost them up. The important thing is for her to be able to manage her symptoms so she can stay on the treatment. If she can do that, then the interferon & ribavirin will be able to do their job (kill the virus). I did the treatment 7 years ago, and have been clear of the virus since. I hope your cousin will have a good outcome, too. Best wishes to you both.

Hepa-- is the latin prefix for liver and -itis is the suffix for inflammation of. While most people think of Hepatitis as the viral A, B, C type; it really is a generic term for inflammation from any source.

Hepatitis is a swelling of the liver that makes it stop working well. It can lead to scarring, called cirrhosis, or to cancer.
