Mac's can be affected by spyware and virus, but most spyware is only written for the windows operating system. Since Mac is its own operating system it can't run the spyware just like in can't run a windows version on MS word.
As mac gets a bigger share of the market, hackers will write wore mac compatable spyware.

From a technical view it is possible but really not likely. There is a lot of reasons to why Mac's don't get viruses/spyware.

The structure of the OS used in Mac's are based on UNIX design. Unlike everyone thinks, Unix/Linux CAN get viruses/spyware.

Don't believe me? Do a google for "linux/unix rootkits"

edit* only one that is right is the above user.....

If Mac's where used more then WIndows based computers it would be just the other way round. Mac's would be loaded with spyware and WIndows would be clean.

"A Mac gets much of this out-of-the-box protection from its open source UNIX heritage. The most critical components of Mac OS X are open for review by a worldwide community of security experts. Their input helps Apple continually make Mac OS X ever more secure. And it’s simple to update a Mac with the latest advances. By default, a Mac checks for updates weekly. For pure peace of mind, you can set a Mac to download security updates automatically. Apple digitally signs the updates, so you can be sure they come from a trusted source."
