In Buddhism it's said that laypeople who hold down typical lives have a better chance to practice patience, altruism, compassion, etc. than monks/nuns in a monastery. Mindfulness and altruism in your deeds, no matter WHAT you're doing (eating, playing, etc.) can have "balance".

My job doesn't distract me from my spiritual self. When I leave the office, I leeeeeeeeave the office. And my beliefs are introduced into my work because they're a part of me through and through, and people respond to it. I think anyone can balance these two without a problem. Althooough my work softball team is called the F Bombs. That's kind of not cool...

Unfortunately, working is necessary, unless you can find a sugar daddy or group who will support you while you seek enlightenment. You must tend to the physical self before you can tend to the inner self.

In addition, some careers serve as a means for achieving some spiritual goals.

When we wish to live a more spiritual life, our work can aid this pathway. By living in the moment & giving ourselves fully to what we do, in any area of our life, we enhance our spiritual self.

No job = no money = no stuff

You might be rich in spiritual self, but no one likes a stinky guy living in a cardboard box.
