I recall seeing a 9/11 program where it showed that the NYPD and the FDNY couldn't get along just before the the first tower was about to collapse. My friend who used to be in the USMC also said that officers in the army feel awkward when they have to collaborate with the Navy and other military contingents. Is this true, or is the friction that they show just an old-fashioned rivalry?

Believe me brother, NYPD and FDNY STILL don't get a long, by no means. As far as animosity between the services... Well, I've had the pleasure to do some joint exercises I never had that feeling. Yeah, a lot of times you get Army guys cracking jokes about Marines and all this talk about which service is better but, for me at least, it comes down to the fact that we're ALL Americans. We're ALL serving America and while we're proud of each of our branch of service and the unique history each brand has, at end of the day we're really one team in one fight.

Here is the difference and I was drafted into the Army. This difference is based on how tough they are and what is going to be expected of you. Marines will test you and do it hard. Army is next. It is almost a tie between Air Force and Navy but I give the Navy the next nod then Air Force. There is an exception with the Army and that is special forces such as Army Ranger. That would then exceed the basic Marine. And an exception with the Navy with Navy Seals.

I think most of the animosity you see is on tv. While there are surely some isolated incidents where the "competitive spirit" has gone a little too far, The vast majority of service men and women don't feel anomosity towards other service branches. There is always a healthy and good natured competition between them but no more than what you would find in any private company in America. Trust me, a member of any branch knows no limits when it comes to protecting or helping each other, no matter what branch they're in. Even in basic training, your taught to recognize all US military uniforms as a symbol of brotherhood and complete trust for one another. A little competition and a few wise cracks about one another is healthy. I wouldn't call it animosity.

I only hate the Navy and Marines during the Army-Navy football game. I will again this year. Otherwise I never gave too much negative thought to the other branches of service. I just thought they made a different enlistment choice than me. That's all.
(Air Force had all the babes when I was in and their facilities were 100-times better than the Army's.)

This is all basic. People will be people in all situations. We all have the basic instinct that we are better then the other person and have the answers to all problems. Trouble is that some ,if not most , wish to keep quiet and let the "know-it-all's" do the deciding. Then when the outcome does not match ours, we gripe and rebel, whine and sit in coffee shops, etc,,etc,, and talk about we should do this, or do that, but ..nothing done is the outcome. We are but a drop of water in the big pool of LIFE... Learn to live with it and take your stand or meet the others at the coffee shop.

Yes it is true. Mostly it boils down to mild mannered ribbing, but on the higher end it can lead to sweeping changes by the Joint Chiefs.
Mostly though it consists of jokes about the other branches;
U.S.M.C. - Uncle Sam's Misguided Children
The Air Farce
Squids, swabbies, taxi cab to the Corps.
Army mules
The rivalry comes out of ignorance and jealously. People mock what they don't understand, or are wishing that they were.

It has to do with funding.

There is a pay and benefits rivalry between the NYPD and FDNY.

Between the different military services it's funding for weapons programs.

hi i was in the army for 3 years then went into the core , i believe the reason is because every branch believes they do more than the other and is better , the navy was the first ,and they own the Marines so they think they are the best but in reality they all work together to resolve the problems of the world . they are all equal in my book

its not just FDNY and NYPD its firefighters and policemen in general. I don't know what it is they don't like about each other but they don't seem to get along, maybe because they seem to get in each others way when trying to do their job... because firefighters are also paramedics( you know first responders to any emergency)... as far as the military is concerned, I think its more like sibling rivalry or just playful banter that they exchange but no true dislike for each other... all in all they love what they other services do

It's just rivalry.. I was in the Army, and we thought the Marines were stupid for being on the front line (cannon-fodder we called them), thought the Air Force were wimps, that sailors were limp-wristed, that the coast guard wasn't even a real service, but it was all ribbing really, none of us would have hesitated to immediately lay our lives down for any of our military brothers if need be.
