My best friend just asked me to be the Godmother of her first child, due in about 3 months. :) I am not a religious person, so I do not know what this entails and what I have to do. Thanks!

Depending on the religion the job of being a godparent is one of standing by.

In Catholisim, my religion, you as a Godparent pledge that if the parents should pass on that you will take care of the baby and bring them up into the church.

I don't know about other relgions, but I am sure there are similarities.

I have never thought of it as being religious. My Godmother is more like my grandmother. She is just a good friend of my moms. You are just the moms friend and she wants you to have a special part in her child's life. Some people that are Godparents actually sign legal documents that state they will obtain custody of the child if something were to happen to the parents. That is rare though. You should feel honored that you were asked to be a Godmother!

My god mother bought me a lot of stuff like a 2ND mom and when my mom died I was 16 she took me as her own daughter I did not live with her but she got me ready for my prom was at my graduation and stood in as my mother for my wedding all the momentd in life that you really need a mama there for! she refers to my baby as her grand child. I am preg. and I would choose a Godmother who would be to my baby what my Godmother was to me especially in the event that i died or feel sick and was unable to as much. Being a Godmother does not mean you have to take the child if the parent dies unless the will leaves them to your custody but for now mom and baby are healthy just buy the baby a lot of stuff and be like the worlds best auntie. It's a fun job and my God mom was the best!

Originally it was the godmother and godfather who would take care of the child , if the parents dyed.
And they are supposed to give the kids presents on Christmas , birthdays etc. And be a part of their lives. Plus they are present on the baptism of the child. And all other religious things.

I would ask her what the expectations are. The term 'Godmother' is used in so many different ways now adays.
It could simply mean that in the event of her and her husband dying, you would take care of her child.

The actual role as a godparent was originally interned to be the one who would instill a seance of religion in the child hence the name "Godparent". But that has changed and now it's mostly to have someone to take care of your child if something should happen to you or just because your friend wants you to have a role in her child's life.

Tell you you are honored but are unable to fulfill the commitment of being a GODparent.
Your only job is to make sure the child is raised with a strong religious base. If you don't have one yourself you cannot provide one for the child.

The purpose of Godparents were to replace the original parents should anything ever happen to them such as sickness or death,etc.. The godparent teaches the child about it's culture and religion, manners, etiquette, and other things it will need in the world when he/she grows up.

Godmother doesn't always relate to religion. I'm a godmother and my basic duty is to spoil my godson and if God forbid something happens to his mother, I am to take custody of him. I would be responsible for all things parental.
