Hello country girl,

Well, when I have that problem I just take a little extra frosting and put it on the edges that have split. Stick them back together and frost the whole thing...do what is called a crumb coat for frosting. Put a little of the frosting into a small bowl and add a little water...this will then dry and you take another bit of frosting go over the place where you mended the cake. Then frost the area total. I would take a paper towel and blot the cake with it...laying it flat. It makes the design that is on the paper towel into the cake. Will you be serving anything else with the cake?

Just use frosting to "spackle" over the crack.

Like you said, there's no time for a "do over" so you're stuck just covering it up.

Besides, a crack isn't a show stopper. If it were missing a chunk, then you'd have to be more creative. Fortunately, it's only a split.

Also, you eventually want to transfer the cake to a sturdy/rigid base so the crack doesn't open up when you move it around or when you present it.

Next time wait until it is cooled more to move it. never the less, you can fix it, just frost it in the pan and cover it up or try to move it, risky, and frost it heavily to cover the crack. It may be too moist or too dry also that caused it to split when you were moving it. Hope it taste's good anyways... happy cooking to you
