First, it would be insecurity... second, it is loss of faith in their teachings...
If these extremists truly uphold to their religious doctrines, they wouldn't even fall for a single point where they should even be provoked or angered...

Some do, and some don't, just as some nonreligious people get provoked and angered very quickly, and some don't. Obviously, the more easily someone gets that way, the faster they will respond, making it seem as if all (religious) people do. But if I say I hate hot dogs, and some guy writes back angrily, telling me how awful I am to say anything bad about hot dogs, does that mean that everyone who likes hot dogs is hot-tempered? No. It means that I drummed out the guy who is.

I'm a religious person, and I've noticed the same thing! Alot of "believers" are show-offs trying to be better that others, and try to "be more humble than you".
Alot of the religious people passed right by the message that they are trying to learn!
Alot of these religious people aren't sure of what to believe in so they think in a very narrow path and aren't open to questions, or any type of philosophy.
All modern religions have a strong base in philosophy, and alot of these people don't catch that and believe their book of praise literally!
I'm a "bad christian" because I appreciate Buddha, and Confucius, and Mohamed.
The religious people who get provoked easily are usually closed minded people who don't know what to do, and are afraid of new ways of thinking!

For no less reasons than ANYONE would be provoked and angered by having their 'foundation beliefs' (religious or otherwise) challenged--and that is, is that they have accepted these beliefs based upon 'emotional' versus mental reasons, and have no real way to logcially defend them.
My point is, is that this problem is NOT exclusive to 'religious people', but to ANYONE who bases their 'foundation beliefs' on anything other than thinking, reason, logic, etc., as they will be unable to 'defend' or respond reasonably--or without 'emotion' (illogic).
Anger is often associated with a 'fear response'.

Religious people who get provoked or angered in discussion of religious matters are succumbing to their emotions and are not really practicing what they are supposedly preaching.
It is not ours to judge, merely to 'plant seeds' and let them either take root or become abandoned. We must each seek our own paths as they seem relevant to our existence and not force our ways on others.
As such, provocation and anger are inappropriate reactions in what is supposed to be a nonjudgmental environment.

Because for most religious people, their religion is a way of life and a big contributor to who they are as a person. Having something mocked which is so dear and important to them is naturally very hurtful and upsetting. Maybe you don't share their beliefs, but respecting their right to believe it is the thing to do.

Because we believe that our God is the head of our lives.
Non-religious people do not respect that and attack God. This instantly insights anger.
The question I really wonder is, why do non-religious people even care about religious people at all to provoke and anger us?
If you are an Atheist, then so be it. You have no business in religious sections anyway because basically you'd be wasting your time on such "fake" issues.

Religion is very personal. Many that I know have been saved from death, insanity or deep depression because of their born again experience with Jesus. To put it down would be like belittling someone that saved your life. Since most scoffers think they will save themselves, they have no concept the hurt their words inflict on some people.

because they are probably closed minded people who felt like you were stepping on their toes about something in their religion that they are not doing or they feel you can tell they are not really into it and they are also the people who feel they are 100% right all the time even when they are wrong. I'm am religous but I have learned that I am not an expert at it so I listen and learn with an open mind

I'm a christian and I don't get angered quickly. I do have a kinda cruel sense of humor sometimes that makes people think I'm angry but i'm just playing around. I know some that do though because they are way to over defensive. But its not me! lol
