Go to a non-denominational christian (bible-based) church.

I would advise you to not commit to any of them. Definitely go to a Christian church, but learn, learn, learn. Study the bible but more importantly, learn to trust God to show you the way.

I was not raised in the church either. And I have found that a denomination is a mistake. I will loosely call myself 'Reformed' ( as in reformed from the times before the Roman catholic church) or 'Protestant', but loosely only.

But learn first. Have enough confidence ( that should take a while, it's not something that happens overnight if you are like me) , to know that God wants you to know the truth.

I want to leave you with a few preachers so that you can experience a bit of God's word:

Baptism is a public proclaimation that you believe in Jesus Christ, identify with His death and reserection, and commit to following the Word of God as best you can. That word tells us that baptism is part of our commitment. Whether you decide to do it or not is up to you. I suggest you find a bible study on baptism and determine for yourself if it is important to your relationship with the Lord. Ask your pastor or teacher to direct you to study materials on the subject.

Jesus was non-denominational. He came so that ALL people of ALL nations could come to the saving & redeeming knowledge of God's great love for us.

In other words, to remain a member of your family it is not necessary for you to talk to them, spend time with them, to hug them, to kiss them, and do things for them that make them happy and proud BUT because you DO love them and you want them and others to KNOW it, you do all the above things.

That is how Jesus views baptism, communion, and Bible study. You do the things He did, and the things He asks you to do simply because you love Him and you want anyone and everyone to KNOW it.

Dear iwonder,

"Christianity" is not a club that one joins. I believe there is such a perverted view of "christianity" today that most people do not understand the concept. First, "christian" was a term that was used to identify those people who lived as Jesus Christ taught. Their lives were a reflection of Jesus Christ.

I do not know how much of the Bible you have read but if you read the New Testament, Jesus constantly referred back to what was written in the Old Testament. He makes reference to David, Daniel, Jonah, Isaiah, Moses, Abraham, Lot, Noah, Elijah, Jeremiah, Adam and others. The religious leaders of Jesus' day hated Him because He always spoke the truth and obeyed the word of God. That is because Jesus is God! He is the God-man.

Jesus' purpose in coming to earth was to pay the enormous sin debt for His sheep. The "sheep" are those individuals whom God chose to save before the world was ever created (Ephesians 1:3-5). The ceremonies in the Old Testament-sacrificing of lambs and burning them on the altar-pictured what Christ, the Lamb of God), came to fulfill. In order for those whom God had chosen to become saved to enter heaven, ALL their sins had to be paid for. The penalty for 1 sin is to spend eternity in hell. So, Jesus would have to endure the equivalent of spending eternity in hell for each person whom He had chosen to save. The whipping and nailing to the cross was not the payment for sin! You must understand that Jesus had to endure the equivalent of spending eternity (forever) in hell to pay for the sins of His sheep. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemanae, He already began to throw Himself to ground with with crying. This was before He was even arrested by the Roman soldiers. This was where Jesus began to endure the wrath of God and it continued until He said, "It is finished" on the cross. The pain of the cross was not the payment for sin--it was what we could not see that was the payment. God was pouring out His wrath on Jesus in a way that was equivalent to Him spending eternity in hell. But we could not see this with our eyes!

Secondly, iwonder, God is the only One who can save a person and make him/her a "christian." One cannot "accept" Jesus into their heart. This is a "false gospel" that is so prevalent today in our society. Read Galatians 1 because God tells us that those who teach and follow these "false gospels" are on their way to hell.

Many people do not understand water baptism either. Water baptism plays no role in salvation. It is simply a sign that just as water washes away the filth of the skin, so the Lord must wash away our sins. See Ephesians 5:26 and Titus 3:5.

I hope this helps you. If you want further info, Google my sources.
