Take pictures, and just give him lots of TLC. (Special food treats may cause him undue pain). Our beloved dogs just never live long enough! When that time comes, I hope this will help.

May I Go Now?
by Susan A. Jackson

May I Go? May I go now?
Do you think the time is right?
May I say good-bye to pain-filled days
and endless lonely nights?

I’ve lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?

I didn’t want to go at first,
I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.

I want to go. I really do.
It’s difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day,

To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you’re sad and so afraid,
because I see your tears.

I’ll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you’ll always know
that my spirit will be close to you,
wherever you may go.

Thank you so for loving me.
You know I love you too.
That’s why it’s hard to say good-bye
and end this life with you.

So hold me now, just one more time
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you’ll let me go today.

My heart aches for you & your dog. I had to have a dog euthanized due to bone cancer & I have one now that we'll have to make our last trip to the vet probably within the week. The pain is horrible just thinking about it. I spoil her, feed her whatever it is she likes (people food & all) take lots of pictures & spend about all my time with her. I am even neglecting my house work to be by her side as much as I can. My girl Desire is 10 1/2 years old. Here is a beautiful poem you may like to read. I found this poem the very first time I read it hanging on the wall at the cancer specialist vet when I took my boy there. http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

I'm so sorry for the both of you having to go through this.
What every one has written is great the only thing that I can add is to give him tons of hugs and let him know that you love him in any way you can every day.
When the time comes, may his crossing the Rainbow Bridge be as painless as possible.

In re of "May I Go Now"- what a beautiful piece. If reading the question wasn't enough to get the tears flowing, the poem was.

We just put one of our Greyhounds down because of bone cancer just Saturday. We found out about the cancer and combined with his weight loss and size of tumor, we spent our last night with him....we mostly just took a lot of pictures, gave him all the things he wasn't supposed to have and spent most of the night touching him and crying to be honest. Our other Grey knew something was wrong and stayed close to him too. We didn't have him a long time and he was my best buddy. It's funny, he should be behind me right now....waiting for me to get done with the computer and spend some time with him....I miss him terribly. You have my heartfelt sympathy...it's so hard to loose a friend. I told my kids that the best part of having a pet is all the fun & love you can share. And the worst part is saying good-bye when it's time.

Don't know if you'll like my answer but here goes. First of all love him, spend time with him and comfort him. Okay, here is the part you may not like. Is your dog suffering terribly? If so, do you plan on having him euthanized, I just feel that sometimes we need to love them enough to let them go. Sorry if this upsets you, I know that losing a pet is hard but isn't watching them die slowly just as sad. I had my dog put to sleep a few months ago because he was suffering with disease, I held him and hugged him during the whole process and I swear right as they were injecting him I seen peace and no pain in his eyes for the first time in a long time.

I know that you are asking what to do for your dog and everyone is offering all of the right suggestions. I am offering what you can do for you. I understand your pain I just went through the same situation. Someone suggested to me that I should visit the Rainbow Bridge web site. There you can read other peoples comments and share your own sadness and pain with people who understand. The night before we went to the vet I sat for hours reading and crying. It was somehow comforting to be among people who understand.

I am very sorry for your dogs illness and offer prayers for you and he.

Wow! I am sooo sorry! That has to be one of the most horrible things that someone can go through! I have told my husband a few times that I kind of wish we had never even gotten our dogs because I dont know what I am going to do when they die! -Of coures I dont really mean that, I love my dogs to death and I wouldnt trade them for the world! Its just that I am soo atached to them! I really do think of them as my children or atleast as part of the family! I am tearing up just thinking about it! lol- If I were you I would spoil him rotten! Make the most of the time you have left with him! Cherish every moment and make sure he is as happy as possible! I would also take a bunch of pictures!.. Again I am sooo sorry that you and your pup are going through this! Just thank god that you had 10 wonderful years with him and know that he is going to doggy heaven! I wish you both the best of luck and I will pray for you and your pup!

I had to put my dog to sleep a few months ago due to a massive brain tumor. it will be the hardest thing you will ever do, it made my husband realize he was human. Anyway we did all the things our dog loved to do, go for a ride, walk and the evening we had to put him to sleep we took him to McDonald's ( he loves french fries) and that was the first time he ate in about 2 weeks without force feeding him. We went in and sat with him on out lap in the exam room and he stated to pass away on my daughters lap, the vet only had to help him along with the procedure. I think he knew and his suffering was over.

I agree with spoiling him rotten. Lots of cuddles and photos. Then get a personalized frame for pics, and if he'll be cremated, they make nice urns for a memorial. I'm so sorry to hear your dog is going through this, and I know how hard it is. I bought my dog an urn and she's literally on the mantel, with a piece of her personalized blanket under it. So she's always with me. Play as much as you can with him. It sounds bad, but he'll be in a better place. God, now I'm crying thinking about my former dog. Bless you for being such a caring owner.

just give him lots of TLC, and prepare for for grieving, some books can help with this, we all know these days will evntually come, by doxi is a year old, and man was i worried about 2 mins ago, evidently my sis didn't close the door all the way and she just left and went down the stree to the neighbors and the neighbor brought her back, i'm going to talk to that neighbor right now to let her know what happended., but just enjoy his last days and maybe make a scrap book, and think about all the good times you have had
