There are too many BEST restaurants here. It would take you a very long time to eat at all of them.
My favorite is LeCirque. Mostly celerities and wealthy New Yorkers.
For steak and/or Lobster I dine at Palm or Palm Too (they're on 2nd Avenue)

Daniel
Le Bernadin
Jean-Georges
Peter Luger (the ambience aren't as good as the other three, but the steaks make up for that)
And, possibly, Per Se (I haven't eaten there, so I can't give a first hand opinion)

Gramercy Tavern. Some other good suggestions here, except for Tavern on the Green which is a tourist trap and in general a mediocrity not worth the price.

Always a tough call in NY, I vote for the following: Per Se, le Bernadain, Daniel, Masa, and Jean Georges. Bring your expense account.
