Does having a career that symbolizes the drain of spirituality in modern day america appropriate for someone who wants to expand the mind and reach new levels of spititual ecstacy? Does having a job that contradicts your personal ideals for life make you a hypocrite? Or, is a job just a job? A way to contribute to society and nothing to do with your own personal aspirations?

A person works most of their lives. I think it should be something you like doing instead of just "contributing."
Being in a work environment that you don't enjoy takes a toll on the mind as well as the body.
Your work environment and the people there are relationships. If you don't like it, it's going to be one long tough road.
If what you want to do is constantly going against your inner voice--you are going to HATE it. You will hate the very thought of getting up in the morning to go into "that place".

Sadly. most people think it doesn't matter, a job is a job. Sigh. I want to believe there is more to it then that. I quit a job that paid me a lot of money over a moral issue - I was asked to lie to a client and a friend. I refused and moved along. But "Most people live lives of Quiet Desperation" and I think your question is the reason. We do think "It's just for the money".

Joseph Campbell said "Follow Your Bliss". I think that's wonderful advice. You should do what makes you happy. Joy should be the measure of our success - not little green pieces of paper. And I think if you love what you do and are joyful in it, the money will come.

Steve Irwin taught me on of the most valueable lessons of my life. Yes, the Crocodile hunter guy. Everyone said he was a lunatic and an idiot. Every thought it when he died - you know "Well, that's appropriate". Not me. I envied the guy. It occured to me one day while everyone was talking about how stupid he was.

Steve Irwin got up every day and jumped out of bed thinking "I get to go to work today!" He didn't hit the snooze button. He woke up early because everything in his life brought him joy. He had no regrets. He made the world a better place by helping animals. He loved everything he saw and would have done his job for free. And they paid him LOTS of money to do it! Me, I used to get up every day and drag out to the car and force myself back into the office hell. I was surrounded by unappreciative, depressed people and really hated where I was. I never had enough money and I was always tired and anxious.

Who's the idiot here? Steve? I don't think so. Steve even died the way he wanted to - doing something he believed in. He left an amazing legacy and always smiled! because he didn't have a career, he had a life.

I'm working on finding that place now - I quit my horrible job, moved to another state and am persuing a dream. And you know what? I'm really happy - every day. I like what I do and that makes everything better.

Your job should reflect you - it should be your joy. It just takes a little courage to persue that.

IMHO, life can't be compartmenalized. one can't hv a work life, a social life, a personal life. We hv one life. If one area of my life, in which we spend considerable amount of time is something that we aren't happy with.... we aren't happy. We work for ourselves, not to contribute to society. Having a job that contradicts your personal ideas, does not make you a hypocrite, just means that you need to choose something different.
You could choose a profession that you love or love the profession that you have chosen. :)

One should do what they enjoy in life for to spend a life time unhappy for the promise of an afterlife would be a total waste of a good life.

If your job somehow goes against your spirituality, your spirituality will suffer.

You can't just turn your belief system on and off, that is totally hypocritical.

contributing to society is contributing to satanism....the devil is the ruler of this world and we live in his world system!
