I grew up catholic went to all religiously affiliated schools so I do to a degree believe that there is a positive force of some sort that helps to guide us. That positive force has taught me to place me faith inward and to be happy with myself first and for most. Religion was a scary place for me because I am a logical thinker I need to see it to believe it. I never felt my prayers were being answered because I could not see the results. I do still pray from time to time, but I am happiest when I show myself that I can make it.
I don't know what this makes me ..maybe agnostic or a catholic with limits?
for others though I think it is much the same a fear of something bigger then them that they cannot see. It does not make them bad people..they just put there beleifs else where.

Religion becomes scary when death as a topic is the only solution to save another soul or be told that life on earth is not the place for God believers. He gave the earth for soul to wear a body and go about his business of being human or creature. Even if there is life in another dimension and it is to be much better, the earth must also be made an enjoyable place to live in.

With religion comes manipulation, lies and corruption. Look at the church. Lies everywhere, coverups, basically just as bad as the US government. Such great things like the Inquisition, making Galileo say he was wrong about the earth not being the center of the universe (which the church didn't actually admit they were wrong about until 1993 mind you, shows their stubborness eh?) and Crusades. Religion is an organized way to control the masses, and that's just what the leaders usually do.
Religion can be a very evil tool when used in the wrong way. The terrorists that flew planes into buildings were doing it for their religious beliefs. Crusades were started because of religious beliefs. Mass suicides, abortion clinic bombings, and on and on and on, all because of their own religious beliefs.
My main problem is the lack of free thought. Certain religions keep you so confined within their boundaries, there's no room for intellectual growth. With all the discoveries that have come in the past two thousand years, anything that countered what was said as fact by religion has been/is called blasphemous, and completely false, whilst it is actually fact (and we can go back to Galileo on this one). They don't want you to think, they want to keep you controlled and doing what they want with the promise of eternal happiness.

Scary? Surely you jest. It's more frightening to admit that there is no purpose, there is no afterlife, and there is no magic sky pixie and a fun place to live after death. You're here for your lifetime and then that's it. What's cowardly is believing in a fairytale just because you're afraid there's nothing more than this.

Because Believers base their crimes on it. Witch Burning, Torture, Wars, Genocide, Terrorism, Slavery, Restriction of Human Rights, Restriction of the Teaching of Science etc. One only needs to read history to see that this is true. Believers are very good at justifying atrocities in the name of religion.

Religion isn't scary.
Religious people are sometimes scary because of their religion (although I'm not really sure the order in which that happens).

They see it as a sense of being controled. That is the problem for most people who are non believers.

It is not. Only propaganda and the behavior caused by misguided and indoctrinated individuals. Now, THAT is scary.
