Actually, it would be best to workout for more than 30 minutes unless you are willing and able to do your cardio first thing in the morning before you eat. The first thirty minutes of your cardio workout is good for getting your heart rate up but until you reach 30 minutes your body is mostly drawing on the most immediate resources of fuel. When you hit 30 minutes, your body is forced to switch to stored fuel--aka body fat. Every minute past 30 that you spend doing cardio is going to force your body to use up more fuel.

Also, if you choose one form of cardio exercise and do that for 45 minutes every other day after a few weeks your body will adjust to what you are doing. In other words, you will not lose as much body fat because your body will get bored. You need to mix it up. So if you are working out on a treadmill, jump on a bike instead. Or take a water aerobics class. Or do some kickboxing. Do this for a few weeks and then return to the treadmill or do the treadmill three weeks a month and something else one week a month. Rollerblade. Bellydance. Whatever!

Also, you should not do cardio seven days a week. Always take a day off. On that day you should not do any exercise (including weight training) but if you want to do some stretches that is fine. However, your body needs a day of rest so that when you do exercise again for another six days it will once again go into "shock" after the rest.

You definitely should incorporate weight training in your exercise three times a week. Upper body--chest and back. Arms--bicep, tricep, rotator. Lower body--glutes, quads, calves. You can work your abdominals every day but make sure you work out the lower, upper, and side muscle groups. Better to do 30 of each than do 1000 crunches.

Also, pilates is excellent for working the core muscle groups but surprisingly yoga is better at building strength, flexibility, etc. And if you do power yoga or one of the other faster flow forms of yoga, you can definitely get an aerobic workout.

MIx that cardio with strength training...you will burn more calories over all, but especially your resting metabolism goes up.
