"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price."(1 Cor 6:19-20)

I'm curious toward how people would interpret the phrase "You are not your own; you were bought at a price." It comes off as a little.. hmm.. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I think if someone actually said that to my face, I might have to punch them.

The "bought at a price" is referring to the tremendous cost God payed in condescending to take on human form and die an unjust and brutal death to redeem us from our sins.

If a person comes to repentance over their sins against God and seeks to receive salvation which is found only at the cross, then they will receive that salvation, but in that moment they are made new and through the washing away of those sins, the Holy Spirit is now able to move into our lives and begin shaping us and molding us into His intended.

In this verse we see that people had received this salvation, but they were not giving up their old ways (sin nature). God is reinforcing their original commitment and helping them to fully understand what that means, reminding them that they are now a "new creation" and should abstain from their old sins because it is a disgrace to their body which is now a temple (House) for God where He dwells within them.

Being bought with a price:
We must go to the cross with an understanding that ones salvation is received through the shedding of Jesus' blood for the washing away of ones sins. That was a cost, a price that was paid because we had a debt we owed that we could not pay ourselves. Jesus paid it for us so that we would not have to. We are receiving that when we lay ourselves at the foot of the cross and believe on Jesus according to John 3:16

It means that you have been bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ and if you have accepted Christ as your Saviour, you should follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit instead of giving into carnal desires.

Whether you accept Christ or not, God still created you and can do with you whatever He wishes. When He chooses someone for a specific purpose, they WILL come to Him eventually. Many have tried to run, but found out it's impossible to hide from God.

Either way you look at it you are not your own. You are a child of light or a child of darkness. Children of light walk in the truth and their Father, whom they belong to, is God in heaven. Children of darkness walk in ignorance and disobedience living for self and their father, who is Satan. Now, people will think, "That's ridiculous! I'm not a follower of Satan. He doesn't control me!" Oh, but he does. God sent his only Son to take on the sins of his elect. He died a horrific death so that we could be free. So, it is wise to remember that we are the Lord's. He didn't die for nothing.

I would interpet it as saying that God gave you your body and you should respect it as a gift. I don't know if I agree with that though. I guess it would depend on what exactly respecting your body entitled.

Even if the person who said it had sacrificed his own life that you might live?

Jesus has ransomed us...those who believe in Him. He paid for our sins by dying on the cross. Our bodies are His. He is in us and we are in Him.
