Talking snakes and great floods and pillars of fire are the things of fantasy... Without this kind of romanticism, who would ever believe that a man could cause the blind to see, the crippled to walk and then, himself, to die and live again.
Fantasy stories are full of romantic happenings and bazaar realities. Don't take it seriously - there are already far to many who can't tell the difference between real and not.

Not so much an answer but just something interesting to think about: Why is it that the things people seem to struggle with in the Bible are things such as - how can a serpent speak, or how could Jonah have been swallowed by a whale and then spit back out, or how did Moses part the Red Sea? Yet, the same people do not hesitate to believe (or at least seem to understand how we Christians can believe) that God spoke the universe into existence. If we, as Christians, take that part of the Bible as truth (as well we should) and if non-Christians can acknowledge the fact that we do believe that, then why is it surprising or difficult for anyone to believe that anything else in the Bible is just as possible? Just wondering.

You are making certain mistaken assumptions:
1. The earth at that time followed the natural laws that govern this earth here and now.
The earth fell just like Adam and Eve did, and a new set of natural laws began to govern the earth.
2. Animals cannot speak.
Just because they don't speak to us here and now doesn't mean that they could not ever speak. Nor does it mean that they never will. Many animal lovers know that animals can communicate without words.
3. You are assuming that inclusion in the Bible meant condoning the behavior reported.
Just because a story is in the Bible does not mean that the writers condoned the behavior of the characters. Many of the writers and readers were shocked and disgusted, even at the time of the events.
The Serpent was a symbol of Satan. Many of the stories that seem farfetched in the OT are full of metaphors, similes, allegories and parables.
BTW: Day (as in the world was created in six days...) also has more meanings than "24 hours". It can mean a variable period of time having some continuity that causes it to be called a "day".
I'm not embarrassed at all.

We all know for a fact that sepent does not speak, The one who is speaking here is satan disquise as a sepent. Since the sepent was more subtil than any beast of the field, satan used this beast to get through Eve.
Actually there is no problem here, anyone can be decieved by anythings that can be seen by our naked eyes. The purpose of satan to do this, is to get back the dominion of the earth from Adam. Satan loss his dominion through the great flood in Genesis 1:1-2 which all the previous inhabitant of the earth was killed through drowning.
The re-creation process of the earth give satan another foothold to decieved Gods precious creation 'MAN'.
By they way, read more of the Bible, you will find that the donkey also speaks.

I don't believe the serpent was like a snake we see now and you have to remember it wasn't CURSED to crawl on it's belly till AFTER it tempted Eve, so maybe it swirled in the air, or something captivating... coupled with the ability to speak. The devil and demons can posses anything even PIGS, and can make voices come from nowhere, so it would be nothing to posses a serpent. It must have had some kinda beauty, for it to have sucked Eve in so badly. lol

The serpent was right in that the body would die. We were created to be eternal , but when Adam sinned, God couldn't allow us to eat the fruit or we would be lost eternally. After Adam was driven from the garden, he didn't doom himself. Moses was given the law and then Jesus later paid the price for us to be redeemed and live eternally with God.

the serpent can speak the same way God can speak. Have you ever heard a burning bush talk? It is one of those unexplained facts of the bible. Adam and Eve were able to hear God just as Abraham Isaac Jacob and Moses were. Obviously the serpent was a test sent by God (at least that is how i interpret it) and as the story goes, Adam and Eve fail the test.

The serpent is identified in Revelation 12:9, 20:2. Satan took control of the serpent and used it as an instrument in his work of temptation. This passage has an object lesson...be careful! satan uses many different ploys to entrap his victims.

Serpents used to have a very adept larynx and tongue. Over time their DNA lost the information necessary to speak.
Or god smote the larynx right out of them.
Or maybe Eve had been eating some of the fungus that was growing on the tree.
Oh man, I just read that the serpent was a puppet! That's awesome. I want to see some of Satan's puppet shows!
