Your AV receiver setup should have an option to enter the distance (in feet) for each speaker from the primary listening position (depending on the model of your receiver). Measure the distances, enter them into the setup menu, and your receiver will do the rest. Most receivers will adjust the volume and the output timing to make everything match up. Make sure you use the volume equalizer (pink noise in each channel) to fine tune this to your ears.

Hi. I would trust my one ears first because everyone hears sound slightly different. The size of the room the furnishings the type and placement of the speakers and your favorite listening position will all affect the sound. If you rely on electronics to calculate the delay for you it may not be just right. This is what i did to set up my system. I put some familiar music on at night turned the lights off so i could fully concentrate on the music so i wasn't looking at the equipment(this is the best way to listen to music by the way)Then i got a friend to adjust the delay control on the amplifier until the rear delay sounded just right to me.You can try the other method to see if they both sound the same to you.

There is only one way to achieve optimal placement of speakers: an analog sound level meter. Through training as a recording engineer and a couple hundred stereo and home theaters installs, I have developed a very good "hear" but I would never trust my ears when it comes to speaker placement.

I'll give you a few hints:
1. What's the speed of sound?
2. How far is your speaker from your ear?
Do the math. The answer will probably be in milliseconds.

3. Google "Calculating delay times"

Many surround sound processors/receivers have a setup mode in which you can tell the processor the distance from each speaker to your listening position. That should do the trick for you if your processor has such a function.
