Click Open and at the bottom of the dialogue box at 'Files of Type' click the dropdown and choose 'Recover text from any file'. This should allow you to read the document but formatting may be lost.

Open the document in Word 2007, then use the SAVE AS option to save the doucment, under a different name. Look at the save as drop down box and select Word 2003 and save it.
You will loose any Word 2007 features that are not in Word 2007 in this process. However all compatible features will read over and it can be opened in Word 2003

Whoever created the Word 2007 document used a feature that Word 2003 can not interpret. Check the Micrsoft.com web site. They should have a viewer/filter for Word 2007 files.

In word 2007, when you save the file, go to the orb thingy > save as > Word 97-2003 document. THen you can read it in 2003.

You will have to go back to 2007 and save it in a format which 2003 can read. Unfortunately Microsoft decided not to make Office 2007 and 2003 compatible, which is creating a lot of problems for many people. If you save it in .rtf (rich text format), you should be able to read it in any version of Word.

the best thing to try if you can't get it to work is to take the extension (DOCX) and delete the X and see if it will read. Otherwise, the person who sent it to you has to save it as a word 1997-2003 document and resend it back to you in order for you to be able to read it.
