Hi, I'm in the market for a new rear projection HDTV. A friend can get me a great deal on a 57in. Toshiba, we're talking about at cost! Toshiba utilizes the DLP technology, does anyone know if this is better than Sony's technology? It's much cheaper. I've also heard that DLPs don't last long and you have to replace a light bulb after like two years? Anyone know anything about this? I'm open for any advice. I'm pretty much thinking SONY/SAMSUNG/TOSHIBA. I should be able to get a good deal on those brands because thats what my friend's store carries, but Toshiba is the cheapest to buy, I just don't want to sacrifice quality to say a couple hundred, but I don't want to pay more than I have to just to have the SONY tag on the front of my tv.

Toshiba is a great name in TV sets. If I could get one at cost I would jump at it. I think the only two things that I would worry about is the lamp replacement cost and what is referred to as the "rainbow effect".

Most current rear projection sets utilize a bulb in order to project the image on the screen. The bulb does have a finite life and will burn out and need to be replaced. I would suspect as the amount of sets sold increase the need for replacement bulbs would also. This may cause replacement bulb prices to decrease since there would be more competition to sell replacement bulbs. However, I would factor in bulb replacement costs as part of ownership of the set.

The real deal breaker may be the "rainbow effect" though as it is something you would not be able to correct. Not everyone can see it and not everyone is annoyed by it. You need to know if you can see it on this set and if you can, if you are annoyed by it. If you are, then this set would not be good for you no matter what the price.

Samsung is just garbage.

Any rear projection will use a bulb to push light through.

Sony doesnt do DLP, they use LCDs to make the picture.

LCDs can get image retention when a static image is left on for too long.

DLPs cannot.

2-3 years is the typical life of a bulb.

If I were you, I would get the Sony, built slightly better than toshiba, also the support is alot better too.

Samsung and Philips/Magnavox are the worst ones you can buy.

To me the DLP has a better picture.

Comparing the TV's side-by-side is one way to choose.

For unbiased professional reviews, check out Consumer Reports. They not only report on the image/sound quality but also on the reliability, which is important when you are going to spend that much money.

I am not big on projection TV's, preferring LCD or plasma instead. But I have been happy with Toshiba and I find that their products are good value.
